Rectangular vent?-'68 Sovereign

I have a '68 Sovereign that I'm repairing. In addition to the two 14" vents in the roof, there is a rectangular opening (not for the AC). right now it just has a piece of aluminum temporarily covering it. This opening has nothing in it. Any idea what the original intent was?

Any ideas will help.

How big of an opening are we talking about? 14"x20"+, or more like 3"x6". If the former, I could see it being a different type of openable roof vent which there are various links to here and I believe InlandRV has replacements. If the latter, probably some regular ventilation vent opening.

Just my initial guess without any more info.

Hi, thanks for the reply. It's 14 3/4 by 24 2/3, and it does have 2 threaded cranks with a small carriage on each. I am sure there is some hardware missing, and also some sort of framed screen missing as well. Any ideas where to get replacement hardware?

It should be an opening for an Astrodome... kind of like a skylight. You can get reproduction Astrodomes at VTS. They don't sell the lifters, use the threaded cranks you have.

Thanks for the advice. Do the lids have a way to attach them? The threaded cranks I have are very simple, just threads with a small rectangular metal block. Each block has 2 threaded holes. They only go up to the top of the frame. I am assuming the lid should have 2 metal brackets that extend down, that attach to these blocks. I guess I could easily make them, but attaching to the lid is my concern. Also, it appears there should be some sort of screen that covers the opening from the inside. Any idea where I could find one of these?

I'm not sure what lifters on a '68 look like or are supposed to look like. Maybe this thread will help?

I actually found the screen cover. It was laying in a stack of screens. Very cool!

Thanks for all the input, I really appreciate it.

It is also a vent, 14 x 26 inches and is called an "Astrodome".

I also have an Astrodome that I just purchased. I have no idea what hardware was there originally. There is just a framed hole and I dont have a clue as to how to install this piece of plastic. I kinda thought that when I got it, it would come to me. Not happening. Can someone post a picture so I can see what it should look like or tell me what to buy.

There should be a bracket at each end of the frame that holds an operator.

A reproduced operator is available.

Use the links provided above to see the pictures of the installation of the lifters or If you can learn to use the new search function, there are several additional existing threads with pictures of installation of Astrodome vents and openers. I posted one there on my homemade Astrodome replacement.
