is glass for '63 Safari anything special ?

My friend in Texas called me today, he found a 63 Safari with all the windows broken out by punk kids

So is any of the glass special ? or is it just flat glass ?
Tempered ? or regular house glass ?

Again thanks for your advise

PS....the family is not sure if the want to sell the Safari, but they do need to fix the glass !

It's very special. So special it is not made anymore. It is curved, tempered and was made by Corning. The replacement alternative is a plastic called (I believe) Acrylite with double sided abraision protection. A 39" window replacement will run about $100. Catch the punk kids and make them pay for it. I'm guessing they owe about 1K in materials alone.

I believe the '66 is the first year the Corning glass was used. I don't think the '63 has it and I KNOW the '64s don't, as that's what our GlobeTrotter is, just regular flat galss in a frame. The curved Corning glass is frameless.

Shari

P.S. You can check out a '63 Safari and a '66 Safari to see the two different windows.

Is glass for 63 Safari anything special ?

Greetings!

The '63 Airstreams used a very similar Hehr window style when compared to the '64s. The glass is flat, and can be readily replaced with flat (tempered probably would be best) stock. The greatest problem may be with the gasket material - - the last window replacement in my '64 Overlander required reuse of the original gaskets as the dealer couldn't locate appropriate replacement gaskets - - a silicone product was used to supplement the old gasket when it was reinstalled - - Inland RV may have the appropriate gasket material by now (my last experience with a broken window was in 1996). If the jalousied window (I don't know if the Safaris had them) - - next to the entrance door was involved, care needs to be exercised with the metal glass retainers as these are becoming more difficult to find.
