"Warning: If you take the key out of the Cylinder before you install it in the lock
"Warning: If you take the key out of the Cylinder before you install it in the lock or the cylinder and key set will be ruined."
Shouldn't there have been a note on the part, key ducted taped in?! Of course I took the key out! Right before I went online to see the instructions of installing.
So am I out $40, should I just chuck the thing? I saw this, read it clearly and would follow the instruction to the letter... "Leave key in cylinder when installing." Please advise, thx!

I "ALMOST" did the same thing a couple months back when I installed the new cylinder. Fortunately, I remembered to re-read the instructions on the web page before I did.
I sent Out Of Doors Mart an email asking them to include a slip of paper in each package with the proper warning and the sales guy assured me they would in the future. This was in early May as I recall. Did you buy yours from OODM?

Jim, Yes I did, and I'm returning it. You are correct and they should put a note in it! Or make it VERY clear in the item listing, of which they did not.

Care to provide some more specifics of which kind of lock we are talking about here and what it fits?

Take a photo of it. What happened? Is it disc tumbler or pin tumbler? Maybe we can help. (locksmith)

How does the lock get ruined by removing the key? Maybe the only way the little locking tab will depress is with the key in it. I would think it would be a matter of it just not fitting in the hole at that point. I am assuming it does not turn into dust or something like that.
