Battery Compartment

I have a 26' Argosy with a rather small battery compartment. Is there a larger interior "box" I can retro fit??

Or can I just pull the black plastic box out and buy some kind of sealed, vented box that would accommodate a larger battery.

And I am not going to AGM's Just way to expensive.

Sundance----By the time you factor in the costs with retro fitting a box, the AGM batteries may look attractive enough, cost wise. Their other positive characteristics may come almost "free" in the total cost analysis.

Here's an option that might work??? 2 regular batteries would outperform 1 AGM I would think. This set up would run about $175 including batteries.

That is a very nice box, where do you mount it? Since it is not vented it can not go inside the trailer.....

It will be vented indeed. In fact better than the existing stock box I think.

I like plastic.
The metal will conduct electricity.
Have you looked at a marine supply or even a Wal Mart for battery boxes?
Our batteries are in the plastic boxes from Wally World, cheap, vented, easy to tie down and cables can come out the top.
We use them for electric fences, boat and Airstream.

The problem was also that the door to the compartment was too small. It was going to cost mega bucks to enlarge the door and vent. So I went with the AGM's and was able to upgrade to two batts.

2 Questions:
1. So AGMs don't need to be vented?
2. Will the OEM Univolt in early 70's keep 2 batteries charged?

My understanding is AGM's need venting as much as lead/acid.

As far as the Univolt......... I've heard it's wise to trash it and get the newer units like InteliPower.

Actually, AGM batteries DO NOT require venting at all. The are sealed and require no maintenance whatsover. That's the advantage of them. The disadvantage is cost. They are expensive but worth it. When my Trojans die, I'm buying to AGMs.

I was told that AGM's have a release valve that triggers at 2 psi and will vent at that time.

I have decided to go the AGM route but with a battery box (Walmart plastic one) and a small vent to the outside.
