Ground faults

Hi We Have a 1998 cutter .If we plug in to a ground fault plug the braker kicks off. I put a tester , positive on the fram and the neg stuck in the ground . The tester showes 6.78 volts . We also some times get a shock when we touch the body of the rv and are touching the ground . Were do I start to look . If we are not pluged in to a AC out let and are only running the inverter we show nothing on the tester . Norm

We had this problem on our 1978 Ambassador. It turned out that I had no ground at the outlet where I plugged into shore power.

I had the a similar problem a few years ago with the external GFI tripping (although I never had power feedback through the trailer body). My problem turned out to be one loose connection ( I believe it was the common) on one outlet. I guess the voltage fluctuation was just enough to trip the GFI. Once I tightened the connection the problem was gone. This was a tough one to find because all outlets, even the one with the loose connection, worked fine when I didn't have the external GFI attached.
