9 way plugs used 1985,1986,1987,1988

I am taking a trip this weekend to look at a 1986 Excella in another state.
I have just found that this year model has a 9 way Plug. My truck has a 7 way plug. Are adapters available? If so, from where?

I thank any that may be able to help.

Bill

Bill, this was about the only info I could actually get, but I don't think it'll be of much use. http://www.rhscales.com/trailercompo...g%20adapter%22 It seems that they only list the 9-way for heavy trucks and motorhomes. Have you tried contacting Airstream? Good luck to you.

Frederic

P.S. I also found this link.... http://www.campersdirect.com/keyston...p?ITEM=3229070 From what it looks like, you're going to have to rewire your tow vehicle. I don't understand why Airstream would have used this set up for 4 years.

I have found a dealer on my route that has the "car" end of the nine hole plug. I will be getting more information tomorrow. Thank You for your reply.

Bill, I have a 9 way on my 86 excella. Same dillema. I found out that the 9 way we have, larger pins at 3 & 9 oclock is different than the current 9 way. The new ones have the larger pins at 12 and center. I got lucky and found a plug at a RV recycle place. The owner did not believe the plugs were different till we found one in the old box of junk plugs he had. Looking back I would just cut the plug off the trailer and install a 7 way. Do you think AS got away from the 9 way for a reason?? Just make it work and enjoy your free time.

if you can get the female end you might just make your own adaptor with a piece of cable and a 7 way male plug.

no changes to either vehicle.

Not to get off the subject, but what did you fly, Doorgunner? I flew on UH-1's and manned the M-61, M-134 and M-60.

Stingray, I flew with HMM-263, USMC, in country 69-71. Our CH-46's were eguipped with air cooled 50 cals. Happiness is a belt fed weapon.

Bill. I got my service manual in front of me. The 9 wire connections are- #1 ground, #2 brake, #3 running lights, #4 charge line (+), #5 stop and left turn, #6 stop and right turn, #7 back up lights, #8 refrigerator switch, #9 tire- tele. If you are just going to drag this puppy home all you will need to wire up will be the stop turn and tail lights. When you get home you can decide how to further proceed. The refrig line is pretty much useless for me as I have a newer ice box that uses propane or 110.My vision does not warrant back up lights, I can barely make out the end of my 33' in the rear view. So already we're down to 7 wires. Isn't life grand. Hope I've been of some help. You can rig up a makeshift cord from your 7 way easily. just get a empty adaptor to plug into your tow vehicle and use some male type connectors to insert into the female openings on the trailer plug. You will have to spread them open a bit for a tight fit. Then apply some Shoe- goo adhesive on the temp wiring. The goo removes pretty easily and will hold things from vibrating loose. A few wraps of tape for safety and off you go.
