water heater thermostat

We have the original water heater in our 1974 Int'l Sov. We recently bought it and when we turned it on, the thermostat burned up. We were wondering if we can just change the thermostat or do we have to change the entire hot water system. Has anyone done this (changed out the hot water system).

Thanks.

The thermostat is replaceable, the biggest hurdles are finding one, and getting the old one out. The whole thing threads into the tank. If you can find one locally, I suggest you have them hold it for you while you attempt the removal. Some places do not like to take parts like that back. If you can get it out and you do not find tank rot, then go for it. If you cannot get it out, then total replacement is your only option. Good Luck!

Thank you. I think my husband is leaning more towards just replacing the entire unit since it is quite old anyway.
