Awning jammed

91 Airstream Land Yacht. Awning will not retract completely, nor open. Any suggestions on what the issue may be? New owner and bought this as Xmas present for wifey, she's getting impatient.

Could be simple; could be hard. Simple = make sure the claw on the rafter bar is over the less diameter part of the step spacer. Unless it is, the awning won't close, but it should open. Hard = siezed bearings or broken spring.
