installing skylight in shower, how hard etc

getting a 2005 31D classic and don't think there is a skylight in shower stall. (i remember it being kinda dark on sunny day) so was wondering about installing a small skylight or something to bring in natural light in a dark shower.

I have the tubular skylight in my house and like the concept but not sure about the RV world.

any ideas or sites to visit to see more.

thanks that sorta what i was thinking. are there any smaller type skylights to use.. most of the ones i see are 24 x24 or larger. don't need something that size maybe like a 10 x10 or so.. I have not been able to find one that small..

any advise??

Being a snarky contrarian, and considering the amount of time you spend in the shower each day vs. the extra holes in the roof, the structural problems if you run into a rib, the leak potential etc, just put a nice LED in the shower and use it for the few minutes a day you need it.

snarky contrarian that make sense.. that does sound like a better plan. now to get a brighter LED for the shower light unit and on to other plans..

How about eliminating the cheap noisy fan in the shower, enlarging the hole and installing a fantastic fan? You get a lot of light and can effectively exhaust the condensation.

I have a one piece bath in my Avion and had Frank Yensan replace my vent with a Fantastic. He actually got the one with the remote control... which after laughing for about 5 seconds suddenly seemed brilliant to me. Ever found yourself seated and suddenly wishing you'd turned the fan on first (three friends are sitting in the living room helping you cut out quilt pieces for a local hospital auction and the chili and beer you had for lunch is ........oooh). So you grab the remote and the evidence vanishes completely!

Contact these folks. The owner owns an A/S so He now makes them for others. I sure like mine. Never will leak. Just give them your inside hole measurements with out inside trim.

You could also make a small functioning or non functioning window/porthole in your shower wall.

If cutting a hole in the roof is comfortable for you then cutting one between the side ribs would work also.

A solar tube is a better thought. I am a HAAG R/C Inspector, and a roofer so this is something with which I have some expertise. Why solar tube? It is round, It is smaller, a 10" or 14" I'd say go 10. It has a dome that can have a trim-able/ rotatable reflective surface that will better direct light down by setting the orientation... i.e., set it to East/West such that it reflects the morning and afternoon sun. The dome is stronger and smaller. Easy to rivet down with caulk. Buy it off Amazon without a tube.

If I were doing it, I would take the standard flashing, which is designed to flash with shingles or some flat sheet roofing material, and trim it down to a 2.5" base. I would use the caulk under that base and pop rivet it down. Me, I would go over that base with a self-leveling caulk. Of course it comes with an inside finish ring. These often snap in place. You can customize the install pretty easily.

I like your idea.. here is the tubular skylight we have worked with before. The base is spun alum so cutting would not be a issue.. I do wonder with the slope of the roof on a 10" model in which the base diameter is actually 15"..

while it sound like a good idea it might be easier to put a stronger light in or add a light for the shower area.

Isn't the roof over the shower more on the curve, this might make it a problem to mount. Put a Maxim skylight in the hallway on the roof centerline by the shower . I have one next to the shower. Between the light in the shower and the skylight the interior is very lit up.

Maybe. But the tubular flashing is pretty flexible, and the 10" width is short enough that I am confident it could be successfully installed, trouble free. It is probably an advantage that the tube flashing is more pliable than the coach material. The Maxium curb mounts I reviewed looked a lot like a standard aluminum curb mount skylight. Velux is a premier, industry recognized flat panel. I've jumped up and down on one of those on a concrete floor as a demonstration, and it held up. Note, they are large. Note, the curb base on them is like 11 ga., or 1/4 inch aluminum. They will not flex, the coach will.

on this model the shower is in the bathroom area not separate like some but that would be a good way to do it for sure.
