Bringing Dad's Airstream Home

Long Story short,

A Dear Friend Asked me to help bring her Dad's Airstream home so she can give it a new life. I am a Lance Truck Camper Guy and a newbie to the Airstream World.

A little background, The Airstream as not been used for over 20 years and is on a mountain a good hour from the nearest town. I believe it is a 1972 with a VIN number of L25D2J2995

I could really use some help with the brakes. On my first trip to evaluate the trailer I pulled one of the drums off to find the return springs had rusted into pieces. What Part number and where can I get them one line? The measure 12 inches across.

Thank you

The VIN states that it is a 1972 25' Tradewind with a double bed configuration manufactured in Jackson Center, Ohio.

The best way to deal with brakes is to replace the entire backing plate assembly which you can get at etraier.com
https://www.etrailer.com/Trailer-Bra...EBRK-7-SA.html

However, it is very possible that the axles have lost their spring and need to be replaced. If that is the case, the replacements will come with new brakes.

Brake adjuster springs are available for 12 inch brakes at Out of doors mart. They come in a package of 2 .

I would also check that the wheel bearings are up for the trip as well. I am also assuming you will put some newer tires on it before heading out.

I think Richard was referring to the likelihood that the torsion axle or axles have lost their ability to flex, causing the trailer to squat, and becoming rigid.

one might consider having it TRAILERED to were it is to be worked on. besides the tires, brakes and axels it may need new out riggers etc.

Axles can be bought without backing plates, so not a waste of money. Hardly think you're changing an axle on a mountain.

Thank you for all your help. Yes I have a set of reliable tires as the ones on the trailer are way past dry rotted. Inspecting and repacking the bearings have begun as I have brought home two of the 4 drums and everything looks very good so far. I am using my 3500 Chevy as a tow vehicle so no trailer brakes do not really bother but would be nice. I'll have to take a camera with me on my next trip to post some pictures.

Plenty truck. No brakes needed on trailer most likely if grade isn’t bad. Go slowwwww.

Stop and check often.

Glad you are helping!! Enjoy the journey.
