Spare Tire Rack

I've got a 1967 Airstream Safari. I'm looking for a spare tire rack that holds the spare between on the A-frame between the propane tanks and the front of the trailer body. I've seen them in pictures of '67 Airstreams so I assume they were original equipment. Anyone know where I can get one? Maybe someone can post a close up photo so I can fabricate one.

Thanks!

The only spare tire rack that Airstream ever installed on their trailers is a carrier that fits under the floor at the front. Any other racks would have been installed by the dealer or individual owners.

You see them on ebay once in a blue moon. I got mine at a vintage rally. It would not be hard to have one made. I can send a photo and measurements. Send me a PM

Thanks! I can take credit for the polished tanks - but the tire carrier is original 1964 - we just POR-15'd it. I drew it up because I think it is a great design and wouldn't be too hard to duplicate.

Tire Rack

This is on my '64 safari. Its attached with buck rivits to the ext skin with no backing plate or backing washers. On the interior shot you can see the very bottom of the rack IS rivited through the front holddown plate. No broken rivits, warps, or skin cracks anywhere near the rack. Supprised me!

Was your '64 Safari built in Ohio or California? My theory is that yours is Ohio...mine is California - thus the different designs.

Glad to hear yours is in good shape...I have seen some that have corroded through and left a "cross" image of pitted aluminum from "gunk" being caught between the carrier & skin. The only way to remove it is to replace the panel...

My 1963, Ohio built, Overlander simply has two pieces of metal welded to the A frame to cradle the tire. They look original. The unit was originally purchase in Mesa, AZ. There were no evidences of tie downs. I assume there were some form of tie down over the tire. I use bungee cords from the wheel mounting holes to the frame.

Thanks to all of you who replied to this thread. Particularly those who took the time to post pictures and designs! This is very helpful.

The design posted by Putback is very nice and original looking but would be hard for me to fabricate. I will likely use the design posted by InsideOut. It's simple and original looking as well. It looks like a beautiful trailer... I hope to someday have a shine like that on mine!

Thanks again for all of the great info!

Shari, our '64 is Ohio built. I'll know about the area directly behind the rack by tomorrow. I'm removing & reattaching it to get a good polish in that area befor I reattach the int. skin.

On my 73 Overlander it mounts between the a frame just under the trailer,if it was ordered,it being a dual axle Airstream says you don`t need a spare. Dave
