Toured the world's largest active limestone quarry, in Thornton IL, this morning. It's the one you drive over when you are going across I-80/94 below the south end of Chicago. The earthmovers they use there aren't running your grandfather's 8 ply, or 10 ply rated tires - how about a 58 ply rating?
I used to work in OTR (Off The Road) tires - Earthmover, and mining tires. It's a fascinating field.
How about a tire size: 65/45-45 (58PR) = 65 aspect ratio, 45" wide, on a 45" wheel. Tire weighs 15,000#. Load Carrying Capacity = 110,000# (50000 kg) at 98 psi (675 kPa)
The military uses some mega-ply tires.
Penske uses some sort of stiff sidewall at least 10-ply Goodyear tires that seem to last 100,000 miles.
