Hey DG!
Besides vermiculite being used, I have also seen cinders and lavarock used, although it would be heavier. You can also use pumice rock which I think would be cool as it is very light and comes in bigger pieces. I have also seen tumbled glass used.

You might check out a gas fireplace supply store or website for some ideas and accessories.

Yuppie Fire Pit

doorgunner,

Hank Hill Rules!

My wife and I purchased the Yukon Legend last year and we love it. http://www.bearcreekmfg.com/ We are both bothered by smoke allergies but love to sit outdoors around a campfire. You can roast hotdogs and marshmallows no problem on the Yukon. It comes with a small cooking grate so you can cook something in a pot or pan but I have not done that yet.

I love the Yukon (and things like it) because you can have a fire where fires are not permitted. It's classified similarly to a gas grill - so if gas grills are permitted you can use the Yukon. When nobody else can have a fire due to dry conditions the Yukon is okay to use.

I quickly found I was not happy with attaching the Yukon to a 20# bottle. The Hank Hill in me (I was raised in a family of propane and natural gas businessmen) came out and I purchased a variety of accessories from MB Sturgis . : M B Sturgis Inc : .Manufacturers of Natural and LP Gas Hose Hoses, Quick Disconnects and Gas Outlets so now I have 50' of flexible hose that I can move anywhere in the campsite. I simply connect the line to the bottle on the front of the trailer and run the Yukon, gas grill and other accessories from the other end. The 50' hose connects via a Y with a quick disconnect. That way the trailer appliances continue to run while I sit by, beverage in hand, and watch the flames flicker.

I don't have any pictures of the installation handy. But I attached a picture of the hoses and adapters. The T shown goes at the end of the 50' hose to attach accessories. The short hose is used to connect a gas grill or gas lantern to the end of the long hose. The quick disconnect shown was later attached to another T that allows me to tap into the main tanks at the front of the trailer.

Lucius;
Thanks - this is more what I'm looking for! 18" diameter is nice. 18 hours on a barbie tank-nice also.
I really enjoy campfires, have a unlimited supply of cherry to burn but more places are having the emberless fires only. I usually carry 3 or 4 20 gallon plastic tubs full of wood in the burb. I'm liking what everyone is showing here! I'm sure other forum members will also be building or buying!
This one from "The Great White North" is nice! eh

"SRanger- I looked at those jet burners- too localized a flame, I'm guessing they may be a little noisy."

I only used the regulator/valve/hose from the weed torch, and hooked it to the turkey cooker burner (the ony part that wasn't damaged) which has a much wider flame. Not noisy at all, just a low hiss. Can't wait to see how your project works out. I hope you'll post pictures.

The best campfires have two main ingredients: a source of fuel and a large liquid oxygen tank. Yee-Haa!

This thread has had me thinkin and it is scary when you get a hillbilly thinkin. If you use the burner from a turkey fryer. Mount that in the bottom of the wash drum and then some vermiculite... those fryer burners throw out some serious flame, all that gas bubbling up through the vermiculite should be nice. If you really want to set it off put three of them in there run three hoses and three tanks. Maybe some thirty or forty pound propane tanks. Big fire for sure. turkey fryers and gas logs are easy yard sale finds, this should cost like $7.25. Plenty of cash left over for more beer

Progress

Well some of you asked for updates- So I've picked up a 35" fire ring thing at half off at the local grocery store. Well actually Linda Lu snagged it.
Then I got the burner, 24" diameter with a 12" dia, inner ring. 32 holes on the outer ring 16 on the inner ring and 3 holes in the each of the 4 in between arms, hole size "41. Now I need to come up with some sort of mixer to induce air into the system. But just for grins I may go direct drive just for experimentation purposes only.

PROPANE FIRE PIT!! That looks to be the beginings of a serious bonfire! Hopefully when I see a red glow to the southwest of us that it will be you and not another forest fire........do grapes burn??
Neil.

PS. Will that fire ring drive up the price of propane!

Only if he augers out all of the holes to "up" the BTUs...which he probably will...

Looks great Tim, keep the updates coming as you tweak it.
