Looks like Kirk creek to me? One of my wife's favorites. I actually gifted our airstream to her there.

I know! I wish I could hit that campground in North Dakota this weekend!
If you haven't already been, take your kids up the road 45 minutes from Hoover to Horse Pens 40. It's not what most would describe a luxury campground by any measure (actually the "sites" are lame) but the "luxury" is that you and your kids will LOVE the place and will remember climbing those boulders at Horse Pens 40 forever. Pay attention to your time and don't miss the nice rock at the edge of the mountain trail for during sunset.

For us (so far) it's this one - our property in South Park, CO. We've made it pretty cozy by adding the decks, and we have a septic system we're hooked up to. We've got a fresh water spring a few miles away and with the solar on the roof and a generator just in case, we're set.

Sooooo Nice... This quiet campsite is quite remote and for the nature lovers.
Known as the gem of Ontario.

MiTTco,
You've inspired me. I have some property in the Black Hills (Spearfish Canyon) that I've been trying to unload, but this may be a better idea. I could do this.

The thing we love about it is that it's less than two hours away, always available , and our nearest neighbor is half a mile away. I need to take some more pictures, we've finished the retaining wall in front of the trailer now, added a fire ring, a horseshoe court, and an additional lower deck under a big shade tree - perfect for margarita's or a nice glass of wine in the afternoon. Kind of nice to be up out of the dirt.

Man, that sounds fantastic. I've been trying to get rid of this property for over 20 years -- we just don't use it, and I'm kind of against developing it because I don't want to be part of the problem (development of one the most pristine canyons in North America). But this would be minimal impact, and when no one is using it, it would just look like an undeveloped lot. I'm going to do the same thing you did. I just need to come up with a plan. You have got my mind reeling on why I haven't thought of this sooner. Right now, my lot is completely undeveloped, but doable. I need electricity, a well, septic and of course a pad to park on, but I don't see those those things as huge obstacles. I would even be willing to rent it out to other Airstreamers (enough to cover the astronomical taxes in the canyon) in the future when I wasn't using it (which would be hardly ever, except maybe for a week or two a year). However, I would have to ask a premium, during the Strugis Motorcycle Rally if we weren't using it. It looks like you've done a really nice job with your little slice of heaven. Thank you -- I think.....you may have just cost me a ton of money.

Spearfish Canyon!
One of the most beautiful areas anywhere in the country. Were we ever to win the lottery, this is where we would buy a cabin.
The idea of making yourself a spot there to camp is superb.

I'm not sharing my favorites sites. So there! However, three very nice locations in my neck of the woods are: Salt Creek Recreation Area near Port Angeles, WA, a former coastal defense site overlooking the Strait of Juan de Fuca and shipping channel to Seattle and Vancouver, BC; Beebe Bridge Park on the Columbia River near Lake Chelan, WA; and Charbonneau Park on the Snake River near Pasco, WA, a Corps of Engineers park.

I'm with you 100% Maggie. Unfortunately, life happens, and sometimes we get "wrapped around the axle" and forget what's important. I think a lot of people have won the lottery, because the development over the past 30+ years has been astounding. Still good, just not as peaceful as it used to be. My wife's family owned most of the entire canyon years ago, but has been sold off over the years. Still a wonderful place and would recommend it to anyone.

Dennis,
Slight off the subject but did you buy your propane tanks chromed or did you have them done? I'd like to get some myself...
Thanks!

We came thru the canyon in July, on our way to the lovely city campground in the town of Spearfish, and just drooled over it.
We have been through there several times over the last 10-12 years, and just want to find a cubbyhole and stay.....every time.
Methinks you would have no trouble renting this out......
I agree the canyon should remain unspoiled, would be blasphemy to do anything else.
Keep us all posted.

I will. I would love to see folks enjoy the canyon with minimal impact. It is truly a national treasure.

Wayne and Sam, I was there in '68-'69 on the mountain with the USAF. Were you with the 640th AC&W Sqdn? were only about 40 of us left back then to man the place.
