Durango Colorado

Looking to see if anyone could recommend a camping/RV site near Durango Colorado area that has hookups and is open through the end of October. We have found two online Pagosa Riverside campground near Pagosa Springs, and Deloores River campground near Cortez if anyone has stayed in either of these two a review and or comment would be appreciated.

Thank you
Jeff

We have stayed at Lightner Creek just a mile or two west of Durango.

Durango

Earlier this summer I stayed in a small RV park just a mile or two from downtown towards Silverton. It was bisected by the RR tracks. As I recall it was on the right, off of a small road that paralleled the main highway (River Road??). There were signs however. It was very convenient to town.

We stayed at Mesa Verde RV resort and made a trip into Durango last year. May be a little far away for you but we liked it ok.

Check out Pagosa Springs RV Park about ten miles outside of Pagosa Springs (formerly Acres Green). I believe the owner will be here through the winter, but double check. Quaint campground at the base of a mountain. Nothing fancy, but gorgeous green grass and remote enough to be able to appreciate the spectacular views despite its nearness to the highway. We checked out EVERY campground in PS, and this was by far our choice...unless you have a class A motor coach. Then Wolf Creek is about as resort as it gets! Safe travels. Absolutely stunning drive in from Taos.

Alpen Rose is a couple of miles out north of town towards Silverton. Great place to stay. Have an all you can eat pancake breakfast every morning. Very nice park and staff. Clean showers and well maintained. Not sure they are open year round though?? We stayed there in August of this year.

Durango Campground

We've stayed at the Alpen Rose Campground at three different times. Excellent facility and staff. Large fenced dog park in case you have one. Clean park - well organized. Would stay there again if near Durango.

Late October....I would check

The road between Silverton and Durango closes in the winter.( I think it might close for about five months ) It is very scenic, but dangerous if it snows. They close it because so many snow plow drivers were sliding off of cliffs. In good conditions, it's not to be missed , but not a road that you would want to continually tow on, back and forth. Ouray is between Silverton, and Durango. Its a nice place to stop.

4J Campground in Ouray, CO is right in town, full hookups, and walking distance to shops. Its a little ways from Durango, but we much prefer it to Durango. Ouray is higher in elevation, which means cooler temperatures too.

I recall the streets in Ouray being a little tight... Great place tho!

I don't recall seeing an RV place...back then having an AS was a distant goal... Wish I had paid better attention now...

We stayed at the Alpen Rose some years ago. We would definitely consider it if we were in the area again. It was in October as we had been to the Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque and then wandered up to Durango to see the area and take the train in the fall. Their website shows they are open until Oct 31.

They do not close the road to Silverton in the winter! Alpen Rose, United and Durango Riverside Resort are all on 550 north of town. The KOA is east and Lightner Creek CG is probably closed. All of the above mentioned facilities are first class. Doubtful if they are running shuttles to the train this late in the year. Plenty to do in Durango...enjoy.

??? The road is closed in winter??? It is ONLY closed if their is an avalanche that has to be cleared. Which ain't that often. Regardless of where Ouray is on your map.

We stayed at Bayfield Riverside RV Park in July & really enjoyed it. It has full hook-ups with streams & a trout stocked pond. I'm not sure if they will be opened during your requested time but it is a nice, clean park.

Hey Jeff & Barb... If you'd like to "rough" it a few days dry camping, there is Haviland Lake, maybe 20 miles north of Durango, east off the road to Silverton. The campground closes down and has no services (that is no rest rooms open, no electricity, no water, no trash collection ... nada) during the winter (probably already closed) but they leave the lake loop open for dry camping at a much-reduced rate. I think it was $9/night, $4.50/night with a Senior Pass. We stayed there several nights last September ... it was quiet and beautiful. Wherever you end up, have a blast! We want a full report, too!

We just stayed at Junction Creek campground, 5 or so miles outside of Durango. Beautiful, well maintained. There is one loop with electrical, but no full hookups. The pit toilets were remarkably clean. It is a Forest Service campground, and I believe they are open through October. We were in our Bambi, and there was a 65 globetrotter 2 spots down.
