Camping around savanna
I haven't camped there but have stayed in condo several times. Check out something on Tybee Island. Great beaches and very friendly people. If you go eat at the breakfast club. Small place but folks line up around the block. I think breakfast served only.

Koa
I stayed at the KOA south of the city about 3 years ago. It's on the water, has swans and ducks. Nicer than the average KOA, and has a RV wash station.

Skidaway SP is great. We just got back the end of Dec. from a week staying there. The park is laid out really nice with lots of room. The restrooms are old, but very clean and heated. We like the sites best in area 3, but really all are good.

We like Skidaway SP, too.
You'll love Savannah!
Bite the bullet and go to Paula Deen's restaurant, every bit as good as you would expect it to be.

For sure, the best bet around is the Red Gate Campground, privately owned and as close to the historic district as your are going to get. 105 Red Gate Farms Trail, Savannah, GA 31405, @912-232-3246. Full Hookups, I think cable but not sure about wifi. Have fun, great place to visit.

We lived in Savannah but have not camped there. Now that we have an AS I would stay at Skidaway State Park or River's End RV park on Tybee Island. Both very different but nice. Skidaway does have wi-fi but only at the park office. They do have a nice outside area where you can sit and work. Great trees and lots of privacy. River's End is near the beach on Tybee but no privacy. I guess it just depends on what you want. Both are a short drive from Savannah. We LOVED living there. You will have a great time and lots of great food. Try eating at Mrs. Wilkes boarding house, if you can find it! Enjoy.

It's funny that you should mention Savannah. We are camped here in Lucy as I write this post. We come to this area quite often as SuEllyn's best friend lives here.
We always stay at Thomas RV Park in Hardeeville, South Carolina. We are about 5 miles from downtown Savannah. On SC 315. We have probably stayed here 20 times in the last several years, and like it very much.
The campground has many long pull throughs with full hook-ups including cable TV and good wifi internet. The price is $30 per night with a AAA or GoodSam discount. If you are a member of Passport America, it is $20 per night. The campground is safe and quiet, albeit a little bit out in the country.
Here's a picture of Lucy on her favorite campsite here. Our favorite site here is 326.

The only Mooses that we have seen here are the stuffed variety in Lucy.
Also, on the campground here, they provide complimentary firewood. They accept cash or check only.

We are interested in this area for the late springtime/early summer. Being we've never been there, is there beach access nearby, or do you have to drive to it? Would this be a good time to go? I've heard some say mosquitoes (& other insects) could be bad that time of year? Yes our daughter says a trip to Paula Deans is a requirement! What time of day would be best to go eat?
Thanks in advance,
Terry

Skidaway is also our favorite when in Savannah. We've stayed there twice and enjoy the peace, quiet, shade and spanish moss hanging from the trees!

We have only been to Paula Deen's off-season, February both times, and had no problem getting in.
They don't take reservations but for same-day, and you have to be there at 10:30am, I think, to get a time for that day. You may encounter a line in warm weather. Might want to call them to be sure.
There may be no-see-ums in late spring, early summer, and these little guys are viciously bad. Be prepared.

I know Paula Dean's is good but you will not want to miss Mrs. Wilke's Boarding house. Here's the link. Mrs. Wilkes' Dining Room
It's not famous like Paula Dean but well worth the wait in line. Be sure to arrive early.
Moosetag, have you eaten there yet???? Don't miss it and let me know what you think!

We just got back from our Charleston/Savannah winter trip, our first trip camping in Savannah. We stayed at Hunter AAF and for those who are eligible I wouldn't recommend it except for an overnight on the way somewhere else. The sites have been reconditioned but they are unpaved, some with better gravel than others. The road is unpaved and the whole area quickly became a mud pit after a rain shower.
On the other hand we visited Skidaway to plan for our next trip. That's where we're going next time. Info is available at:
Georgia State Parks - Skidaway Island State Park
On our next trip we will avoid the mud pit.

A little late perhaps but as a resident of Richmond Hill (just south of Savannah) I would like to plug the GA State Park Ft. McAllister. Very scenic view of the marshes, good civil war museum and nice facilities though unpaved. You just have to be selective when you visit or the No-see-ums or deer flies can make it miserable. Anytime during the winter months is perfect.
