If a AAA office doesn't have the map (they should) and you are a member you get order it online through the AAA website, postage-free. If you are not a member and they won't sell you one then, as we have seen, there are a variety of locations online from which to purchase.

I don't think you will be disappointed in that map. It's by far the best map published by the AAA. Originally done by the Southern California branch of the AAA, it's been in print for over fifty years.

I have what is at least a 30 year old version of that map. I use it when reading Tony Hillerman books to give context to the settings. It will certainly be going with me on my western adventure.

Same here!

Will research later. Does Michelin still make maps for Europe? Not sure if they ever had ones for the U.S. of differing scale?

The basic problem today is that there is no consumer demand for printed maps. Don't get me going about the utter inability of the younger generations to plan a route on a map. "What is a map?" is the gist of their stupefied look upon being asked to point out their location on a map.

The best reply if they are lost and can't deal with a map?

"You can't get there from here!"

Thank you everybody. I called the AAA and they have all of the maps that I need including the Indian Country map right there in stock, free to members.

I'm going there Monday and I'm gonna load up on info. Turns out AAA is quite useful, still, even in this age of technology.

PS I also ordered free travel guides from the state websites of Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado. I already have a package from Utah, which is great information.

I also like to have a full map to look at during navigation on the road and for planning.
As mentioned by others, you can often, but not always, find official state highway maps on state tourism web sites. But I have found that even these don't have much detail.
While traveling, as the navigator, I will often have a state map, plus large format road atlas like Rand McNally, plus an iPad juggled on my lap. One source of map books you might investigate is the DeLorme and also Benchmark series of state map books for recreation. I especially like the Benchmark series because they include a nice regional map over multiple states, but they are not available for many states--mostly western ones. Then you have more detailed information on any particular area with smaller roads on the other pages. At about $20 per state, the cost can add up if you wander far.
For planning, I also use a large wall size US/North America map to get a sense of scale of the trip. It only shows main highways, but notes major parks. For us living in the Midwest, we are crossing lots of states in our journeys just to get to our main vacation spot.

Road maps from AAA are the best by far.

USGS has very detailed topographic maps for specific ares, including all of the BLM areas if you are into dispersed camping for free.

I like it.

AAA for the road and USGS for the backcountry.

This Thread has worked out well for me.

Yep, and after picking up the map at the local gas station while they washed my windshield and checked my tires and oil, perhaps even picking up a free gift.

and, as if all the above aren't enough, and you want the most minute detail for each state....buy the Gazetteers. Almost every state has one (available at any of the above-mentioned bookstores)...they show every trail and secondary road in detail. I love those things. Safe travels. jon

hi who remembers the great maps and trip-tic from them ?
we recently needed campground info. we got the great tour book but also got the Woodalls campground guide.

has anyone used them ??? I do all the stops and look-sees for the entire trip but I just threw the woodalls on the floor and stomped on it. I could not find more than 2 places in towns we needed to stop in.
so my ?? is what does anyone use for that info???
we always have a KOA directory with us.

AllStays app and the Passport America app.

You can look campgrounds up by city and state, or look at a map that shows what's available anywhere you are headed.

I believe AAA still offers free maps with a paid membership. Have you looked at Google Earth? GE allows you to enter an address (or ZIP Code or even Lat/Long data). You can then zoom down to street level. A bigger screen (large laptop or tablet) is helpful. You will need an internet connection or, remember to download said data beforehand, though. Google Maps has a feature whereby you can download detailed maps so, if you find yourself without a data connection, said maps will already be on your device. Good Sam Club, RV Trip Wizard, and others offer trip planning too.

Road mspd

Try truck stops, such as Loves, Petro, Flying J. Some regionals are even laminated.☺

Following up on this.

I stopped by my local AAA office and was floored at the help they gave me. They gave me a stack of maps and guidebooks, all free to members.

The AAA is now a major resource for my trip planning. The bonus is, you actually talk to someone.
