Maine coast campgrounds

Looking for a great campground on the ocean in Maine for the fall and for next year in the summer. My friends tell me that most of the ocean side campgrounds have gone "seasonal" and don't reserve for short periods of time. Surely there must be a few gems left....I would prefer the southern or central coast of Maine since northern Maine is such a haul. Thanks in advance! PS just visited a friend in Montauk NY and drove by Hither Hills State Park. Looks like a GREAT park right on the ocean!

We've never stayed in the Wells/Ogunquit area but if you do and have some time to explore I'd reccomend catching a play at the Hackmatack Playhouse in nearby Berwick. The theather is a converted barn and they serve homemade blueberry pie ala mode at intermission. The pie isn't cheap but it sure is tasty.

Welcome to the Hackmatack Playhouse in Berwick, Maine - Home Page

We've also had fun visiting...or should I say eating our way through... Crabtree's Blueberry farm in Casco.

We are staying at Megunticook campground in Rockland next month. We'll be there for a golf tournament. Rockland is next to Camden so you might try Camden State Park as well. Recompense Shore Campground near Freeport gets good reviews for camping - don't know if they have RV camping.

Have fun!

We were campground hosts at Camden Hills State Park in Camden during June and July. It's a great park and Camden is very nice with a beautiful harbor park. The state park has a limit on how long you can stay and they charge around $35 night for out of staters. When we were out sightseeing we found Lobster Buoy campground just south of Rockland. It is beautiful and right on the ocean.

Both of my suggestions were given. Gray's manor in South Port is very nice. Lake Pemiquad on the next penisula North is great too. But my favorite is in far DownEast, and Gary already said it: Cobs Cook. That area is so beautiful. Most people say "it is such a haul", but the haul is worth it. Once you pass Bar Harbor the real beauty of Maine will be all you see. I strongly encourage you to reconsider the distance you are willing to go. If you do, make sure to check out The Sardine Can Factory Museum in Lubec. It was one of the coolest homespun museums I have ever been to.
