Macinac to Sturgeon Bay

Requesting routing advice. We are spending 3 weeks in the Great Lakes this summer, starting in Macinac, MI and heading to Wisconsin. Is Route 2 across the Northern border a recommended route to the Door County area of WI? Pulling a 30' AS. Planning our time in WI and need to know the direction we will be coming from. Thanks for any recommendations, as well as any suggestions of places/things to see or not miss in MI, WI and MN. Thanks.

Macinac to Sturgeon Bay

US 2 is a very good road, for the most part. Mostly a two lane, with a few four lane sections. Also, passing lanes are provided on the two lane sections in some areas. A few towns, some cities. Traffic is generally light. At Escanaba you would want to take M 35 south to Wisconsin.

One interesting feature in Manistique is the Siphon Bridge, in downtown on M 94 and the former US 2 route. The feed flume to the mill has a water level higher than the road, as the water is forced under the bridge and helps to support it.

Indian Lake State Park, near Manistique, has lakefront sites in the original section, with more sites in the newer West Unit. Sites are reservable online through the Michigan DNR website.

Hey G,
Indian State Park is a nice stop. Then take US 35 south along the lake, there are at least three city county parks on that route, all on the water. Wells State Park is also nice. Take US 41 south at Marinette. As you leave Makinac, traveling west on US 2 you will pass a rest area then on the bottom of the hill, on the left is a place called Loehts (spelling ?)Stop in for a pastie and some smoked fish. Have a few a t trip

We also have used the northern route along Lake Superior, many campgrounds , both are an easy drive, lots to see...

Smile Mackinaw City - Mackinac Island

The straits of Mackinac is the separation of Lake Michigan to the west from Lake Huron to the east, and is spanned by the Mackinac Bridge "Mighty Mac", a five mile suspension bridge which towers 200' feet over the Straits of Mackinac and provides great views to both Lakes and Mackinac Island to the east. You did not indicate how you will get to Michigan, but I would suggest from AK traveling around the bottom of Lake Michigan (avoiding Chicago area if possible) and head up the east coast of Lake Michigan on US - 31, in Michgian. The this the sunset side of Michigan with many quaint small towns dotting the shoreline of Lake Michigan from St. Joseph- Benton Harbor to Mackinaw City at the tip of the Mitt.

Also Michigan's Upper Peninsula, offers great spots on the shores of Lake Superior. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is a must see as well as Marquette MI and, the Keweenaw Peninsula is a trip by itself. The Michigan's Upper Peninsula is very beautiful and less populated with only about 260,000 residents in a land area similar to the lower peninsula. US 2 is a good highway, however, M-28 across the norther section of the Upper Peninsular offers great access to Lake Superior, US-2 runs along the north shore of Lake Michigan. Hopes this helps.

Some good venues suggested here by others. I strongly recommend the Minnesota Airstream Park. It is especially nice, well landscaped, friendly and helpful staff, and nice strolls around looking at all the Airstreams. Enjoy your trip!

Peninsula State Park

If you're going as far as Sturgeon Bay, don't miss the Peninsula State Park, especially if you enjoy cycling. It's a very well maintained, historic park, with many off road trails to ride on. Highly recomend renting a bike if you don't have one of your own.

See Pictured Rocks and copper harbor if you get in that area of the U.P. (upper peninsula)

You will not be disappointed. MI 2 is a fine well maintained highway going through National Forest and villages. Fayette Historic State Park with CG is a real gem. Reserve ahead on DNR web site. It is ghost town 1870s iron smelting town steeped in interesting American heritage. Outstanding restoration. Once you've hit Marinette WI I'd head right to Door County. Green Bay if you wish to visit Packers hall of fame or stadium. G B is 65 miles from Stugeon Bay. Recommend northern Door to camp and Penninsula Park is the place but there are a number of options. Door Peninsula has more shoreline than any county in US. Many State and County parks. Day trip Washinton Is. Charter fishing salmon. Rent a pontoon boat on Green Bay. Fresh local whitefish boil. You could spend two weeks here. We live in Egg Harbor so a little biased. Minnesota is wonderful but best for its own adventure as WI has much to offer.
