Always a huge turn out when the waves show. I watched the whole thing online. Just not the same. Glad you guys made it back in one piece.

Surfer Magnet

Thanks for your kind words Robert.

Streaming does have its advantages. We felt sorry for the folks that didn't have binoculars-the surfers looked like ants. Still it was a great day all around.

We did make it home all in one piece, and if Gemma had her way she would have brought a few new friends back with us. The image below is of her and James Taylor, a South African surfer, right after the end of the competition. She thought with his rugged good looks and broad shoulders he would be handy around the garden. He definitely would be appreciated when wrangling the Honda eu3000is into the back of the truck. Really nice guy!

The Airstream was a surfer magnet. We got lots of admiring "hang loose" and thumbs up from surfers and spectators alike. We handed out water right after the competition and Murray even parted with some of his prized bacon the next morning.

We'll look forward to seeing you in April at Casini, if not sooner.

Happy and safe journeys,

Early Bird

Robert,

We drove north on Highway 1 from Highway 92. We were hoping to park on Highway 1 right before the left hand turn into Pillar Point, Capistrano Street. That was a no go-there were no vehicles parked there, even though people park there all the time during the day. We had directions to the small parking lot below the bluffs where spectators view the competition. That was a no go as well. The roadway leading to it had already been barricaded and security guards were already posted. Now mind you, from what we understand, they close off the roads into Pillar Point, only allowing locals and people who have press/vendor/organizer credentials into the venue at a certain point the evening before the event. The key is getting there early the day before. We arrived before 8:00pm. We drove around and had just found a spot (right next to the entrance to the lagoon), had pulled out the Airstream steps, when a gentleman walked up and inquired if we had planned to camp for the night. We replied affirmatively and he informed us that the local police enforcement officers would be knocking on our door in the middle of the night to ask us to move. We guess he felt kindly toward us, well Gemma really (she's sweet that way), and offered us a great parking spot right across where we were parked, right on the corner of Prescott and West Point. He even let us stay the evening after the competition. We really do meet the nicest people when we're towing an Airstream!

We didn't have a chance to check out your and Mexray's suggestion near Pidgeon Point, but we look forward to camping there someday. We love Pescadero-that's where it's close to right? Gemma's been going there since she was a child. If you get a chance and are in that area, Butano State Park is beautiful as well. We once back packed there-five miles into the camp, in what seemed (to us city yokels) like near vertical trails. That was back in the day-years ago. We hope we aren't getting soft-we still like to think of ourselves as "outdoorsy".

Mavericks Rally next year-were up for it!

Wow, you sure did get lucky with the local letting you stay on his property. It is amazing how Airstreams bring out the nicest people. Were in the planning stage's for the upcoming season. We just might check this place out Butano State Park. Till Casini, Hang Ten.
