What is HWY 1 from Carmel to Big Sur like towing a 25' trailer?

Did it with my 31'. Only excitement was rounding a curve and finding four cows happily walking down the road...

You are going in the right direction, south, so you have the turnouts to stop and take pix without crossing the road. The worst thing about that road when the sun shines, is the view.

The road is not difficult; it's significantly less curvy than 1 north of SF. It
can be crowded on the weekends if the weather is really nice; if you have a choice travel on a weekday and it's almost deserted sometimes. Some tyro southbound drivers find the sheer drops into the Pacific sans guardrails intimidating; this can be frustrating for those trying to maintain a faster pace, and lead to erratic passing behaviors.

It's one of the scenic wonders of the world; leave time for gawk stops and photo ops.

Lots of folks make that trip towing all kinds of rigs. The challenge is to take care when rounding blind curves. The attitude to have is to be reasonable, pull off on safe turnouts to clear traffic and enjoy the view while practicing very attentive driving. Watch for significant drop offs at some turn outs and narrow parking areas that will not safely allow a stop. Give those turn outs a miss.

Have reservations and a plan for your overnights. The area from Carmel to Cambria has very few, in my opinion, no RV parks. Big Sur is expensive.

A often missed jewel on the North end of this trip is the Laguna Seca Recreational Area. Must miss the race weekends, but mid week works. Not much to do there, except view the track, but it's a good overnight to stage the trip South on HW 1.

The State Park South of Hurst Castle has limited hookups. Read up on current status if you plan to use it. South to Moro Bay or inland to Paso
Robles may be a better option.

Easy ,we did it with our 30' a couple years ago, ll the way down to Oceano, nice trip..

It's one of the greatest runs out there. When you get to the end, go to Russell's Smokehouse in Cayucos for the best fish tacos on the California coast.

We made that trip last summer, north bound, towing our 34' with our long bed, DRW truck.... 57' total length. No problems...except as already noted, we wanted to look at the views rather than the road.

We have done 1 several times both up and down with our 34 '. I believe the views to be stellar no matter which direction you go. My only complaint or frustration are the motorists wanting to go faster than me. At times I would have a few trying to pass at once.

The road is why you bought an Airstream. Lots of flat dirt pullouts along the way. Make a point to stop in several. A couple are even paved. Kirk Creek and Plasket Creek campgrounds have some of the best overnight camping. Both are forest service facilities. Fill your water tank prior to heading out as they may not have water available.

I did have a memorable drive on hwy 1 with our 27FB, from northbound from Cayucos, destination Kirk Creek. Hwy 1 was closed about 7 miles south of the Kirk Creek campground due to a landslide. Once the lookyloos left, I was able to do a 180 on the 2 lane road, taking advantage of ALL of the shoulder on both sides of the road. A steep drop off on the ocean side made it pretty exciting, but it showed me how tight you can turn these rigs! Still have not made it back to Kirk Creek!

Once back in Cayucos I saw the "road closed" sign; it wasn't there when we started....

You will accumulate a train of cars behind you fairly often. It's polite to pull off and let them pass. Not whenever or as soon as you get a car behind you, but if one car has been following you for 5 miles, or you get a train of more than 5 or so cars, then it's time to pull over. Some of those cars will be happy to follow you and let you take the heat as they do the sightseeing they wanted to do anyway, but others will want to be on down the road. Motorcyclists you don't have to worry about; they will be around you before you even know they're back there.
