We spent a week over New Years at Blue Water. Tried to make reservations last March, but don't get confirmed reservations until May. They book well in advance. Great place with the tiki huts and waterfront lots. Is pricy, but a great place to stay. For great food in a casual setting with waterfront/open air seating, try Steiger's, a few miles south of BL. Locals recommended it.

If you want to see the Everglades, stop around Ochopee in the Big Cyprus Swamp area. There are several campgrounds. Visit Clyde Butchers studio for some amazing photography. Ride bikes on a paved trail 7 miles into the swamp (or ride the tram) at Shark Valley, or drive the Loop road. The best two places in the Keys are Islamorada and Key West. I would advise staying on Stock Island at Boyd's because you don't want to be driving far from KW if you wish to partake in the nightlife and dining. KW is totally different from the rest of the FL Keys.

I made a little website to help snag those hard to get cancellations.
http://reserve.wanderinglabs.com/
It will check Reserve America every 5 minutes and email you if something comes available. We have gotten two week stays at Long Key and are hoping something comes up this next week at Bahia Honda. (There were 4 day and 7 day cancellations for Feb this morning at Bahia Honda)

Have been to Bahia Honda State Park. It is great but getting a campsite may be difficult. Check on Reserveamerica.com fro availability. Also, John Pennekamp is another good state park in the northern part of the keys. We were there at Thanksgiving. The camp ground is very nice.

We are at Blue Water Key RV park this week. Very nice but also expensive. We have eaten twice at a little funky bar 2 miles south called Geiger Key RV Park and Bar. Checked out the RV area tonight. It costs about $110-120 a night. It looks clean and like a fun place . Spaces are a little close but right on the water. They are next to the Naval Air base so have some F-16's flying over but I like that. Food good and have live bands in the bar until 10 pm. The RV's were nice and some large class A's. Also can rent a boat slip. You might check it out for availability. Only 12 miles to Key West but a quiet little island. Didn't check out the bathrooms. The bar waitstaff are very friendly and nice like a neighborhood bar. Friday night is steel drum night. The music stops as I said at 10 though and didn't seem too loud in the park. Could be a fun Place!

Leo's Campground on Stock Island is closest to KW. Also the most economical. There are some open spots here now. We are working here so we have been here since August. Nice place, no frills, and has a resident population of iguanas.

Another RV resort is Venture Out on Cudjoe Key. If you want you can call them for availability. They have RV lots to rent plus some park models. It is fairly large but we drove by and it looked nice. It is worth a try if you are not having luck any place.

Ended up with two night at Sunshine Key resort, way over priced, general lack of mtc, no wifi, some sites no sewer, bath houses should be condemned and torn down! Three nights at Jolly Roger, WOW! Beautiful grounds, pool, sea wall, nice large showers with plenty of hot water. Clean dog run. There are six Airstreams here now. Still about $80 a night but well worth it!

Jolly Roger is a passport America park with few states limitations but I've never tried booking at the half price rate. Did you talk to them about it?

I have found this website really helpful and to my dismay just got a screen telling me that it has been suspended pending verification: is it coming back any time soon?

That is a scary looking page that pops up. A bit threatening.
