Living in Durango and having made the trip north on 550 towing a trailer a couple of times, I would highly recommend going west to Mancos, through Telluride on 145 and going south at Ridgeway (sp?) to Ouray. Especially in July!

Fantastic feedback. Thanks all! Would surely love to steer clear of nail biter roads for our first trip pulling out West, but assume we'll have to do it sooner than later. So far the route includes stops at Palo Duro Canyon, Mueller State Park (Co), Durango, Silverton and Santa Fe. Still in the early planning stages, so keep 'em coming.

Hey there Stowaways...

So many great suggestions already we'd be hard pressed to offer additional - but, while this one may sound quirky, if by chance you're archers - the Colorado Bowhunters Association annual Jamboree is the weekend (4 days) of the 17th this year.

It'll be near the San Isabel NF, close to Twin Lakes. Boondocking only, but there are some RV parks up the road south of Leadville. Lots of 3d ranges, rolling sage, good fishing, always a hoe-down, and very family friendly.

Just thought I'd toss it out there...
