Baja boondock?
Im flirting with the idea of an extended (2 month ish) trip to Baja. I've looked through some of the old threads and Im wondering what some of the better places are and if it is possible to boondock much, particularlly on the beach. If anyone with personal knowledge could chime in I would appreciate it

no personal experience here but i too am thinking about baja for the 2007 winter.
trailer life or motorhome mag? recently ran an article on safe traveling in baja.
written by someone who travels there regularly.
included some specific camping areas and there were web links/info on baja rving at the end. i got the feeling that there were lots of tracks of beach and desert for dry camping.
and so much fresh seafood i can hardly wait!!
cheers

Rodney,
Although I think their website is a bit cluttered, if you navigate thru the ads, the Bells have some up-to-date info on Mexico RV travel. Here's the Baja link:
Mexico's Baja Camping- A Driving, Camping, RV and Golf Guide Baja Camping
Mike & Terry Church also have a decent RV guide: Camping Mexico's Baja.
We're also contemplating taking our new to us '75 24' Argosy down to Mexico/Baja after Christmas.

I used the Churches' book for Alaska and would certainly buy their Mexico book before I went.

I have taken 5 trips to the Baja since 1999. All were motercycle trips, street bikes. 4 times we went as far south as Loreto, which is about 700 miles south of the border. I want to take the Airstream down BAD. I cannot comment on trailer camping, but I can say it is a most awesome experiance. There are lots of beaches to explore that I have not seen. Heavy street bikes and sand not being a good mix and all that. AAA of Southern California has very good maps. John

This is a great time of year in Baja. I'm there (here) now, sitting outside and it's perfect. Ron

While I will be going to Padre again this year, I have been pondering the Baja as a winter break destination for future years. Does anyone have a feel for whether the gulf side or pacific side is more pleasant?
I was afraid to ask if the violence in Mexico had become a problem in the Baja, but it doesn't sound like it has, which is a good thing.

The Pacific side is typically much cooler than the gulf side. It looks a lot like SoCal in many places. Teh Gulf side is much more tropical, and the water is much warmer, making for an interesting mix of desert and sea. I personally prefer the less travelled gulf side.

Rodney, I think it's a good idea to ask about violence. A friend just back back from Baja (not with a trailer) and had no problems, but I do hear stories about violence. Americans are being kidnapped along the border, so it seems it's a good idea to keep driving for a while past the border cities. I would think an Airstream would attract attention. Maybe the cartels will think you're a Airstream millionaire.
Two months! When do you have time to teach?

If you note the start of the thread it is from several years back when I was contemplating writing my dissertation results. As it stands now, I am looking ahead to winter breaks.
