1st cross country trip to NM

Hello,

I'm planning my 1st (solo + dog) cross country trip to New Mexico (from upstate NY) and wanted to know if I could get recommendations for campgrounds in the Albuquerque/Taos/Santa Fe area. I think I'll need hook-ups, or at least electric. Also, if anyone has any thoughts about what/where to avoid along the way would be much appreciated.

Thanks so much,

James

Don't miss Enchanted Trails in ABQ [http://www.enchantedtrails.com/] and if you're going that way via North Texas, a visit to Palo Duro Canyon is a must [http://www.palodurocanyon.com/]. If you headed through MO, the Onandaga Cave State Park is very nice for AS camping and other fun [http://mostateparks.com/park/onondaga-cave-state-park]

Welcome to Nuevo Mexico!

You will find that NM has a very nice State Park system.
When you know your route, let me know, and I will make recommendations.
I have camped in most of them, and I am also NM Volunteer for the Outdoors. We groom trails, and help State Park Managers improve their parks throughout the state.
P.S. Sign-up now for the Balloon Fiesta Rally in October!

What's your time frame, James? If it's really soon, then considerations are pretty different as a lot of places are still closed for the winter.

Thanks for the info! Not going until late May, early June. I suspect it can be chilly in northern NM before then.

Ah, in late May most everything will be open. I think Carson National Forest generally opens its campgrounds around Memorial Day, though it may be a few days later (or earlier).

The 4 Corners Unit is having its Summer in Santa Fe Rally at the Santa Fe Skies RV Park on the south side of Santa Fe just off I-25 the last weekend in May (the weekend after Memorial Day)...it would be a great place to land for a few days, meet some fellow Airstreamers, and get some great travel tips for the area. Last year we did the rally, then headed north to Taos, Angle Fire (where you'll find Lynn Eubanks' Monte Verde RV Park, by the way, and a great place to stay to take in that area)...from there we went NE up around the "Enchanted Circle" which encircles the mountains that area home to the Taos and other ski areas... pretty country.

NM state parks are great...and national forest campgrounds abound...great camping all around, with accommodations at any level.

Somebody mentioned Enchanted Trails in Albuquerque, and, lo and behold, I was just then on the ET page on Facebook:

If you get to Amarillo, look for the Big Texan Steak Ranch on the north side of I-40. Turn just after you pass the front and go to the back and yield to the right - into a huge truck parking lot for over night. If you park near the horse stalls they will let you run an extension cord for temporary power.

You'll probably want to include a stop at the Airstream Factory in Jackson Center, Ohio. It's only a slight detour near Columbus.

The Restoration Rally is usually held in early June at The Enchanted Trails Rv Park in Alburqueque. Great place to meet other airstreamers and learn something. I flew in last year and had a great time! See here for last years thread.

Santa Fe campground

In October we stayed 2 nights at Rancheros de Santa Fe...full hook ups & we thought it was quite nice. It's on Old Las Vegas Hwy. very close to I-25.
