My '67 Caravel had a roller shade over the stove. You can't do a drape type treatment due to fire risk. Here are some pics of the one I did. It is similar to the old one, I just bought a cheap vinyl shade from HD, pulled off the vinyl and put my own fabric on it. Fabricated a valance out of some aluminum. Sew a continuous pocket in the bottom for the plastic piece that goes at the bottom of the shade (I replaced with a piece of flat stock aluminum). I put a bead chain loop on the bottom (after the photo was taken) that allows the shade to attach to an upside down picture hanger clip I have on the wall when in the closed position. The spring action in the shade keeps it tight against the curvature of the side wall. Roller shades can be a bit temperamental when opening, but I think it is the best option at this location.

We looked at those but how do I keep them from staying secure on the road?
And close to curved wall?

Bob- I used .032 Aluminum. I have two window cranks at the bottom of my '67 and as long as they are in the down (6 o'clock) position when the window is closed, it usually isn't a problem. Not sure how to interface with yours...

roller shade in custom sizes for 1970 caravel
So we want to -- no NEED to -- replace all the spring loaded roller shades in our 1970 Caravel. Widths are about 42", 29", 21" 18" and 35".
Do I have to customize these widths myself or is there somewhere I can get the right shades (with rollers, springs etc)? The springs are still functional -- I suppose I can buy a big vinyl shade, cut it up and staple the top edge to the existing roller.
One of you said you bought a cheap roller shade from "HD". Does that = Home Depot? And do they have the range of sizes I need? I thought they had only standard sizes (which never =s what you need!!)
help, Melissa

Turns out someone in the Caravel forum answered this one. They will cut them to whatever size you need at the standard hone store (HD, Lowe's, our local hardware/carpet store). Both length AND width -- yep, they cut the roller part too.
That's a lot easier than I was making it. Who KNEW??
