Recently purchased 1972 International Soujern. I might as well have purhased an emphasymics lung! Any suggestions rejuvenating the interior.................clean, paint, pray. If I don't get some help I might have to give up my clean date for non-smoking. My dream of owning a silver palace is turning into the nightmare of owning an iron lung!

I've owned & managed rental property most of my life, also a non-smoker. In the 'old days' oil based paint was best to cover & 'seal' smoke infiltration to plaster/dry-wall. Recently I've had great success with 'KILZ' (r), either their oil or latex based primers. For non-paintable surfaces I'm not sure what works best.

there was a posting last week about this. I didn't follow it but I think Orange 409 was recommended.
I cleaned my *velvety* nicotine interior with reg 409 all purpose cleaner spray on. and Viva paper towels. still took 3 apps in some places.
somebody will come on and help you find the thread....I don't know how to get there.

I was planning on kilzing it and painting but I believe I read in another thread that the paint would not adhere so I am starting to get a little flummoxed. Called Inland RV spoke with Bear (when she was still employed there) and tried every cleaner that she recommended, mostly bathroom mold removers coupled with a lot of elbow grease all to no avail. I appreciate prior responses and all future recommendations.

Will Febreze help at all? I have a sister who smokes. She only smokes outside, and always spritzes herself with Febreze when she's done.

I would think ammonia in water would work to wash away the oily residue on hard surfaces, and Febreze should get rid of the odor on soft surfaces.

Just educated guessing.

Strip it clean! or you will never be satisfied - and that lingering smell will always be there. Strip all wood and re-treat, replace any carpet, either dryclean the curtains or replace. Have all the seat cushions deodarized and sanitized - not dry clean - use a wet clean system so that the sponge is done right thru to. A good mold cleaner (with bleech) should do the trick for any yellowing.

I've already ripped out the carpeting and am having it replaced and all the draperies and cushions are being fabricated from scratch and I have been cleaning and cleaning and it still smells like sssssssssssssssssalem lights!

I've used this mixture in my 64 GT..WORKS~

If anyone wants to mix up a batch..
The formula consist of these ingreditions:
1/3 Ammonia, 1/3 Alcohol, 1/3 Water and,
for each gallon of mixture, add a cap of liquid soap.(Joy, etc.)
This works extremely well on getting Zolatone finis cleaned~
plus windows as well..
{If you plan to paint the interior..skip the soap part.}

You could mask the smell with something stronger say...

Skunk
Burnt hair
Spoiled eggs
Vat of dime store cologne
Last years thanksgiving turkey carcass - left in the oven to fester


Don't forget to clean out the ventelation system, fan housing, etc.

castrol super clean works to wash walls
if your going to paint it
prime first with a shellac based primer
ie zinser bin primer

Years ago one of my Father's properties had a fire, mostly smoke damage. The painting team said that adding a little vanilla extract to a gallon of paint kills the smoke smell. It worked back then. I don't know the proportions.

I sprayed my entire interior with Kilz before painting it. It didn't smell of smoke before, but it is still nice and fresh smelling almost 3 years later.

A friend works in housekeeping for a motel chain. Occasionally they have to put a smoker in a non smoking room, which generates different cleaning routine. The first thing they do is put an ionizer in the room, and turn it on! That's the main difference in cleaning for them.
I smoke, my husband doesn't. I keep an Ionic Breeze from Sharper image going all the time. Non smoking friends tell me they cannot tell how much, or how little, I smoke inside. Unless they see me smoking, that is!
So my advice would be to clean all surfaces using whatever method works for you, same for all soft goods, upholstery, etc.
