"Dynamotor"--what's it for?

Hey!

I have a 1960 24' Tradewind... While troubleshooting the 12-volt system I found mounted under the bathroom "medicine cabinet," in back of the two light fixtures (one 110v, one 12v) what looks like a little electric motor... The tag on it says "Dynamotor", and lists: DC input 24 volts, 1.75 amps; DC output 300 volts, .07 amps. RPM 6000. Service: Cont. It was made by the Electro Engineering Products Co., Inc. of Chicago, Ill.

I don't know what to make of this... Can I just take it off-line because it was for something that is no longer in the trailer?

This sounds like it was a MG set (Motor Generator) used in the 40's and 50's for providing plate voltage for Two Way radios. Early mobile radios needed 300Vdc for plate voltage on the final stage amplifiers.
I just chucked one of these last year, it had been sitting around in our radio shop since the early 50's.
Mybe the last owner was a vintage ham radio operator, look for signs of this, ie. antenna mounts...
There is a WBCCI Intra club for Ham Radio enthusiasts I understand it has been around for a while. Might have been part of this club.

When I was a ham operator in the '60's, dynamotors were all the rage for powering converted police radios on the 2-meter ham band. They disappeared with the advent of transistorized power supplies. You can safely chuck yours.

Or visa versa. In the power industry, before the advent of the thyristor and solid state exciter, they are used to make DC power for the excitation of the generator field to make electricity. Has anybody ever heard of Amplidyne??
