Live In Remodel

Hello Everyone,
First off my name is Derrick, I'm a 28 year old Active duty military member. I just picked up my first AS. I made the leap, and I mean dive into my 1968 International 30FT. My wife thinks i am crazy and so will a lot o people on here.. maybe not since we all have the fever together. My plan is to live in as i remodel this trailer. I will be moving to AZ for Army Schooling and plan on living in this on base in the campground. There are showers and restrooms on the camp so im not worried about having to utilize the bathroom in the trailer right away. I picked this AS up from a guy locally who just didn't have the time or energy to put into this project. As i will be away from my wife and son for about 7 months i figure this may be the only opportunity that i will ever have to put in as much time as I want without hearing it from the wife. The plan is to Pull everything out all the way to the bath and pull up and replace the floor fix frame as needed and then proceed with the rebuild. I figure with the info on this thread, a lot of sweat equity and learning I can really enjoy this project. Here are some pics for you all to see the start of the build. Let me know if anyone is from the Sierra Vista/ Fort Huachua Arizona area. Looking forward to hearing from everyone!!!!

Welcome to the forum and good luck on the rebuild. I would check with the base before tearing everything apart. Some bases do not let you rebuild anything anywhere you want on base. Only at the MWR facilities and I do not think they will let you live in the trailer in their compound. The only MWR facility that would have the tools and other hardware would be the automotive area and they are normally behind a locked fenced area at night.

I know since I like to tinker with my trucks and other stuff. Some bases, I was at, did not like me removing anything unless I had some place to store what I removed out of sight. Unsightly mess I think they call it. LOL Anyway, ask first then have fun.

Welcome Derrick,

Congrats on the Airstream and good luck on your project. Winning Spouses over to the "Shiny Side" can be a challenge when all they see is the starting point. I bet she and your friends will come around once the clean up and rebuild process begins.

If you have a chance visit a local rally so you and your Wife can look at some restored rigs. This will give some ideas about your own resto/reno and allow you to meet other Owners.

Keep us posted,

Kevin

Howdy and welcome to airforums.com, Derrick! I too wish you all the best, and that includes some luck finding a good place to work on the TT when you aren't drilling.

The trailer looks basically sound, but something must have been going on in the bathroom to have that stuff torn up. Good looking shell, too, from what I can see from the pictures you posted.

Keep in touch and ask ALL the questions you want, this is the place with the best pool of knowledge on Airstreams.
