i'm new and starting a restoration.

hi everyone. i'm new to this forum. i have a 1964 airstream globetrotter. it used to be my bedroom when i was a little kid. it has been sitting on my parent's property since then and was gutted somewhere along the way and i want to fix it up. i won't be putting plumbing or appliances back in, so i'm not looking for that sort of thing. however, it needs a lot of work and pretty much all the basics need to be replaced. doorknob, possibly a new door, skylight, a couple of the windows, light fixtures, light cases, etc. can anyone recommend good places to find these parts? i've been looking and looking online and haven't been able to find the kinds of things i need. any help would be greatly appreciated. it's feeling a bit daunting and i'm not even sure where to start.

Welcome to the forum JesseJane!
Thats a cool Trailer. I've found the best bet to find those parts are to watch Ebay and the classified here on the forum. Some of those items you mention will be kinda hard to find, like the door.

Start a thread, post lots of photos and before long folks will start chiming in and answering your specific questions.

Welcome!

Welcome to the forums. There is an amazing wealth of information here and very helpful people. Browsing through the individual topic forums like Interior Restoration will give you lots of ideas.
Sounds like you may be planning a stationary trailer, but you'll still want to make sure the floor structure is good and the shell doesn't leak before you invest in a new interior.
Vintage Trailer Supply (VTS) is a good starting point for vintage parts.
Good luck!

Hi everyone. I've been working on my trailer on and off since my original post. I split time between the Bay Area and Mendocino(where my trailer is). It took me forever to strip the clear coat. Something I thought would be fairly uncomplicated turned into several mild freak outs and many different stripping agents until I finally found a method that worked for me. While it did work, I'm not sure I recommend it. It was a nightmare! Anyhow, here are some photos of where I started and where I am today. I think I'm ordering an astrodome and some other items tonight. I bought a riveter and replaced some missing rivets today. Another thing I've never done! I have many questions for you guys and am already insanely appreciative of the wealth of knowledge and support this forum offers, so thanks!

It's thrilling to see how shiny it's getting. I'm still in the first stage of compound polishing.

I think a bit of both! I think I keep realizing that I didn't understand exactly what I signed up for! I may have underestimated how much work there was to be done. I'm having fun learning new skills and it's especially exciting now that I'm really starting to see progress. I can't wait to fix up the inside as well.

Right now I'm really confused about how to go about replacing windows. The window on the entry side is broken as well as the middle window on the other side. Maybe this is a dumb question, but do I replace the entire window? Or just the glass? Or the glass and seal? Everything else so far has seemed pretty self explanatory, but for some reason, I'm baffled by the windows.

The spiders love the trailer as much as I do. They all seem to want to raise their kids in it.

And those are just two of them. There were several more creeps setting up camp on the globetrotter.

Keep up the good work

Jessie Jane
You look like you are doing a great job. What a great connection to the trailer since it was your bedroom.

On the 66 there are no frames there are two people that can help with your question (actually 30 or 40 on this site) but Andy at inland rv and frank aka 62overlander. I believe you may have to replace the whole thing. How do the floors (subfloor) look? And will it be in a mobile status? If so axles which I believe are dexters will need replacing. It all sounds overwhelming but if you take it a little piece at a time it's not so bad. Keep up the great work.

from the photo it looks just like the window on my '60.
there is a frame and some light blue/gray edging over the glass where it sits in the frame, correct?
if so you can go to any glass company and have them replace the glass. they just cut a piece and use bedding tape to mount it in the frame.
at Vintage trailer supply you can get the cover material...
Hallmark 12 Glazing Strip

I think this is what you need. but verify with them.
I think '66 is when they used the one piece glass without a frame where you have to replace the whole thing.

Mine is a 64. I'm not sure if I mistyped earlier, but from what you guys have been saying, it sounds like my windows might be the same as a 66. I haven't even looked at the subfloor yet. A friend of my dad's replaced it a few years ago, but to be honest, he's a crazy person. for all I know, he used duct tape and particle board. I'll take a look soon.

Eventually, it will be mobile. Will that be terribly expensive?

Thank you! This really helps. I don't know what I'd do without you guys!
