Hello from Northern Nevada!

First post here, figured I'd say hello.

I'm purchasing an older Airstream from a friend of mine as her husband passed away recently and she's moving out of town. I do not think they have used it in a long time as I know it has not moved in a very long time. I don't know the year or model yet, but from the pictures I took of it recently I know it had a worn away member ID of 13960. Maybe tomorrow I'll take a closer look at it, and figure out the model and year of it.

In any case it will take me a while to get it usable, but when I do I'll probably start taking some weekend trips with it. This trailer is a little small for what I want in a longer trip type of trailer, but for now it will do just fine. I've had in my plans to have 2 trailers for years though. One smaller for local desert use, and a larger more modern one for longer farther trips.

Well take care everyone!

C.

We'd love to see pictures!

Smaller trailers have definite advantages so give it a try before you jump up to a larger version. Most serial numbers have some letters in them and the combination can be decoded to give size, model, factory and year.

Greetings from zip code 89411 to 89412; Welcome Tazameir! You know you have at least an instant 20 or so best friends, those of us 'streamers that hang out together at your little annual local gathering in the desert. Please feel welcome to hang out with us on playa, you'll have an audience of lots of a/s "experts" http://www.airforums.com/forums/f288...1-a-72089.html

Would you give us a little history on the rock art museum on the side road heading north out of Gerlach? Few burners even know about it, we just cruise by on the way to the playa. Could be a side trip for the group on the way out some time.

I think mine is about a 20' trailer.. I'll check it more tomorrow probably and post. I should probably mention this is not my first trailer, just my first Airstream. I heavily modified my old one for use at Burningman. Like I removed the bathroom and made a much larger bedroom, and created enough room for a queen size bed. But That trailer was a POS. It's hard to keep a trailer clean when it lives on the desert for 4-6 weeks a year. In any case it was destroyed by someone running into it. Then I had another one last year that was just too small for my needs, so it went to someone who could use that more then I could last fall.

Well that little gathering in the desert for a week a year... Shoot.. I work for them.. Me ---> Burning Man: What is Burning Man?: People: Year-round Burning Man Staff

As for Guru road/Doobie lane.. Some irony about that. It was created a long time ago, and it was created by a family member of the person I'm buying my Airstream from! I've only driven it a few times even though its 3 miles away from my house. Here is a good site talking a little about it.. Dooby Lane I'm pretty sure he started it back in the 60's though I'm not 100% sure.

I'm in a club here in town (Gerlach/Empire) Called the Black Rock Desert Rats 4x4 club. We do a good 6 trips a year or so. Most are camping trips where people bring their trailers/rigs along for. Only one or 2 are non-camper trips. So my goal for my trailer will be to have it at least sleep-able by our memorial day trip. Then we'll have another for free-fishing day (Nevada its the second Saturday of June) and then I'll possibly use it for a week on the desert around the 4th of July where I setup a portable drive-in movie theater. Black Rock Movies I hope to have an AC unit purchased and installed on the roof by then for obvious reasons. So I have my work cut out this spring/early summer!

Great to have you on board. See you at the Burn!

Be careful when you install your a/c. You can oil can the skin and put a permanent crease in it. Use a scaffold or some method to distribute your weight across the ribs. You can get on the top if you take care to put your feet only on the ribs.

Oh yea.. I'd never dream of standing on the roof in any case! Where To Buy And How To Install A Coleman RV AC Rooftop Air Conditioner is a pretty good link to the install. But thats down the road. I'll work on clearing out the trash, and creating a place to sleep is my first project.. Oh and getting the outside lights fixed. Most are missing lenses, etc. After that, I'll probably polish it, and get starting on fixing whatever is broken on the inside. As you can tell, its been sitting a *long* time..

I did the Burning Man from 2002 through 2008. We would park in Bruno's parking lot on Sunday afternoon have cocktail hour and dinner at Bruno's and spend the night. Monday morning after breakfast at Bruno's we would head to Black Rock City. I wonder if we ever crossed paths.

It's possible, but man.. I'm pretty busy that weekend.. I do all the technical stuff for the event. Mainly the main microwave link between Gerlach and the event, and all the staff internet connections, and phones. Now we have it merged with I@BM who does the public internet connection.

what kind of backsheesh do we need to offer to get on the net? Airstream parts, a little polishing, some gasket work....

Cool Wifi @ bm

Getting net @ BM.. It's all about the wifi bridges.. Invictus Wireless - Wireless Solutions for 802.11x, WiFi, Antennas, etc. Pick up one of those, learn how they work, get a tripod and a mast, stick it high into the air, and point it at your closest node. Then run an ethernet into your trailer. Done! Or.. Get a switch too, and any other campers near you can plug into it as well. Don't bother trying to get wifi IN your trailer. It's a metal box after all.

So I'm thinkin that my trailer is this.. A 22' 1965 Overland Safari model

J-0225001 N/A N/A 3320 20 1/2" 35022JC OH Land Yacht Safari

Based on the SN# being J 0225170

I'll have more pictures upload in a bit to that link above of the trailer. I took a pile of more pictures of it today. It's still at the old owners house though. I wont have time to move it or touch it for another month or so. But these pictures will serve as a good baseline of what I'm starting with. That's if she does not clean it out first.

Have you been to Burningman? It's a unique experience, and the wifi runs rampant with too many people trying to repeat it. The cross talk is nuts, and often the distances are too far so it often does not work in the metal boxes.

Hey Tazameir,

welcome to the fold. While we're delurking, I too work for the man. I've been a Burning Man Media Team Captain for the past 13 years, and have been visiting with a 196 Overlander for 5 years now.

I'm at Media Mecca (radio handle: Yoms). Hope to catch up with you on the Playa!.

Doh! Small world.. Don't tell Andi about my trailer! I like keeping things a surprise from the SF staff until they actually show up in Gerlach... Most of which only come out here for the event. This will be my 15th Burn, and 13th working with them. 9th as year around staff. I'm Taz on comm.. But I live on the TIT channel during the event. Or sometimes DPW 3, which the whopping 4 of us in NV that are year around staff use.

Ahaaa. Wont say a word. I may head out for our pre-burn shindig in July. Hope to see you there?

Will you be storing your trailer at the Ranch? Mine is stashed in Reno for the time being.

Cool

Heck no! My old trailer which I stored at the ranch was hit and dinged more times then I can recall. I own a house in Gerlach. I'll be storing it there. As for Juplaya, I'm not 100% sure yet. I usually do, but I also like a break once in a while. I have an email list for it though if I do decide to go out. I'd usually pull internet out there, and work a bit.. Also I'd set up the drive-in screen like I did last year.

I went out to Juplaya last year, didn't ask around before hand, didn't meet up with anybody. Turns out about everybody I know on DMV was out there, and everybody else. Certainly plan on going this year but not sure if I'll take the Silver Dragon, I could camp in my truck for a day or two. It sure is fun just driving, say that way, as you want, the speed you want, just be cognizant of maybe driving into the down range of somebodies firing range. Might be fun to go watch the amateur rocketry bunch farther down playa sometime.
Don't let it out if you have internet capabilities out there, that's in the middle of our big DMV Mutant Vehicles processing crunch and the Committee would sure use your up link and process a bunch of Mutants while they're out there that weekend.

If I do go out there, I'm easy to find. I always camp where BM will occur that year. Reason is I *would* be testing the internet connection and I would actually WANT people to use it. So if you see a group of campers/RV's a drive-in screen a couple of porta potties and an AS right about 2-3 miles out from 12 mile obviously that would be my group.

Oh cool, I'm hearing a Juplaya expedition coming on! Last year on Juplaya I ran into some DPW guys just setting in a truck in the sun out there, close to where I picked up my playa dust sample for my Airstreameri and Geologists presentation. Then Monday after the burn I ran into them again while I was looking at the ashes at the Man base. They said I had met them in July a few hundred feet from same spot.
When does the committee decide where the Man is going to be each year?
