Exterior condition review

From the exterior of this 1970 Overlander are there any red flags? Does it appear to be in good condition? No rear separation or shot axles (problems I have seen mentioned on the forums)? I know that there are a few dings and 2 dents on the roof but other than that, should/are we be road ready?

Hi, pictures always seem to make things look prettier than they really are; Without actually being there to see it in person, tow it, or try things out. I don't see how looking at a few pictures, anyone could tell you how road worthy your trailer is. Examples: check propane systems for operation and leaks. Inspect tires, wheels, brakes, and wheel bearings would be a good start. Now from what I could see, You have some exterior lighting problems. [missing lenses Etc.]

Take a look inside the rear compartment access door. The loose rail trim at the rear would signal water leaks in that area. The wood floor immediately inside would then be rotted out. Those trim rails are notorious for causing problems there. The tires look like old bias 700's. I like bias ply but some may not....regardless....they look old and you don't want a blowout problem.

The axles look to be past their prime, and a new pair should be in your maintenance budget. The loose trim (as Melody Ranch commented) is a concern to me, as trunk leakage/floor rot is a potential problem area. It may just be the picture angle (left side of the bumper appears to be lower), but I would also check the rear bumper for any give.

Other than that, I don't see any obvious signs of trouble. There are minor on-going maintenance issues as mentioned about lighting and sealing that are standard maintenance on most all AS'.

I would also check the vent seals, as this seem to be a seldom checked leak source.

Thanks all of you. This weekend we will be inspecting the items that you have pointed out. Would never have thought that loose trim could mean leaks. Yes, tires and axles appear to be showing their age. Will also check the bumper.

We have the exterior lights, just need a dry day to put them on.

I will try to report back with our findings.

Check the vent fan motor over the stove area...see if its working...we replaced ours and had to finish a job that somebody else started and could'nt figure out...but we did. And God forbid, don't let anyone operate a weed eater anywhere near it! Ha! Those windows cost upwards to 400.00 plus when it comes to replacing.Also you have a new airconditioner up there too...hope it works good. And some water stain in the wood of the front door...you will really grow to love your 70' airstream.

I know all about the pain of replacing a window! Inland RV shipped that curbside window to the right of the door, I will guard them with my life!

The PO said that he transfered the AC unit from another trailer he had. We have turned it on and it seems to work.

Yes, the wonderful water stain. That lovely item if from a screw in the porch light cover that drips down the door frame, to the interior of the door and since we have not replaced the door gasket it dripped on the flooring. Who knows how long it has been happening, but my husband confirms the sub floor had not rotted yet.

I know that it is a labor of love..just wish it was a little less labor!
