Insurance just went up 25% (ouch)
I just got my Progressive insurance bill for our RV (Airstream Interstate) and the annual premium went up 25% year over year. Holy cow!
Anyone else seeing this?
The agent said the following, "It is related to a change in rates for the state of Colorado in general. Since there have been more frequent and more severe hail storms, the risk for a future claim has greatly increased, and so the premium is adjusted accordingly."
We did have a hail-related claim, in fact, but the agent said, "I just quoted what the policy would have been without any claims filed on the last term. If you hadn't filed any claims, you still would have seen the same increase. The claim itself is not impacting the rate."
What is your policy doing year-over-year and where do you live?

Mine stays the same. I live in Michigan, we don’t get much hail. We do pay high rates, probably due to proximity to Detroit but at least they’re steady. I can’t imagine rates not going up in hail country. Someone has to pay for those claims.

We had Progressive and witnessed the same thing here in PA. Our annual rate went from $400 to $480 in one year with no incidents. I called and was basically told that all Progressive RV rates were going up. Fortunately, our agent also handles several other companies and we switched to Safeco and got our rate back to $400 with agreed upon value and the exact same coverage.

I am a new owner, and my 2017 FC costs about $400 in NJ through New Jersey manufacturers (who I also get my auto, homeowners, and umbrella through). This includes collision with a $1000 deductible.

Our Progressive rate on our 2016 27FB increased 5% here in GA - we've gotten increases on our State Farm homeowner's as well. We've made no claims on anything, just figure the companies have been seeing a lot of increased claims in general.

Ours went up 20% in NC. We have full replacement coverage on 2018 Classic. Was told it was due to weather related events.

I had Progressive for my home, autos, and trailer. The home costs went from $900 year, then $1200 year, then to $1900 year. This was over a period of three years. I changed to AAA and the home insurance dropped to $600 year. The AS is about$180 for the year. I gave up on Progressive.

I wonder if that's why they are Progressive - progressively increase costs each year. Yes, we are in the same boat. Progressive went up from $550.00 to $623.00. We switched to Safeco for $525.00. The same coverage.

May not be particularly relevant as we are in Canada, but I pay about $550 USD for coverage on our 2016 27 FB Int. It has stayed the same for the past couple of years that we have had the TT.

Ouch too
Safeco in Arizona went up 25% on my 2017 FC. Good Sam uses Safeco. I wonder if it went up too. Agent said I could drop the new replacement clause to lower the premium. I will look for lower rates instead.

Just saying, look at the annual increase in last prices at Airstream. If you have a five year replacement policy, your replacement unit would now cost lots more than the original price. We have our 2014 31' Classic that listed under $100k when we purchased it new in January 2014. The Classics are north of $150K due to all the electronics and other do dads that will be problematic in five years or less.
What happens when the computer brain dies in five years? There may not be a huge inventory of spares and I doubt the RV industry mandates a seven years parts availability like for cars and trucks.
We love our manual awnings, stabilizers etc. Easy to repair and operate as long as I can turn the cranks.

I was told off the record that the rates nation-wide are going up to allow for recoup of losses sustained because of Hurricane Harvey, which flooded approximately one million cars in the greater Houston area in late 2017.
Your agent in your state may not be telling you that, but that's what is going on behind the scenes. There's no way that the loss of one million vehicles can be recouped within a restricted area; that massive volume of pain has to be distributed nationally. My rate went up by about 30% IIRC (our rig was not flooded).

I am glad to know this problem is not specific and is across the board, but my experience with USAA and Progressive was odd.
I had all vehicles with USAA up till they partnered with Progressive then they moved the Airstream only to Progressive. All registered in Florida. Last month I changed my legal residence to West Virginia and moved everything here. The USAA auto policy went from $1100 (FL) down to $430 (WV). The Airstream went from $1050 (FL) up to $1205 (WV). No coverages were changed, it was a mirror policy with stated value and $1000 deductible on comp and collision. Progressive told me it was due to less number of RV's in WV than FL so premium increased. Next I told him there was less cars in WV than in FL too but USAA had cut my policy by 60%...….at that point the call connection went bad!! Go figure!!
Overall I plan to shop around for a better RV policy. Years ago I had Camping World Ins and it was very reasonable.

Hey thanks, everyone, for all your individual perspectives and regional experiences with RV insurance. It helped to read you stories and consider different possibilities.
Mike1997 - very weird on your rate changes from FL to WV. I guess different markets, different vehicles, different companies? (or phase of the moon? :-)
InterBlog - good point about soaking up those massive losses from storms. We saw first hand the devastation on our trip in the Interstate to FL last fall!
switz - hadn't thought about that, good point.
andyherman - LOL, I know!
Wstewart - LOL on "Progressive - progressively increase costs each year."
albret - I might be following you!
james.mileur - exactly!
