Heater core 'dead' said radiator shop...

The shop owner took one look at where the leak occurred and he said it was dead. It would cost $135.00 to "re-core". I thought these shops could repair just about any type of radiator core. I will call my RV place to see if they know how to fix it, but sometime before, they told me that they only do coach work and nothing mechanical. Hopefully this is "coach" work.
Where can I get a replacement heater core for my '79/'81 MH?

My friend you are headed for the radiator shop as this is definately not coach work. Radiador shop will recore it for you. That's what you need.

I went to a different radiator shop that also does AC work on MH's and he said it will cost $176.00 complete to build a new brass core and place it into the heater core frame. I think it's a little high but I can't drive around everywhere getting estimates, so I went ahead and ok'd it. He also said that the AC system rebuild (R134) would be about $1000.00. I need it for the summer so I'll have to bite the bullet for that too. I've heard that it's an average rate for that type of work, so I'm ok with it. It'll be nice to get the MH in shape again and enjoy it the way it should be.

I have had good experiences in my older A/C systems that had R12 with a product called ES12. Its better than R12 yet safe for the environment(thats what the ES stands for).
You loose a lot of cooling power swapping to R134a, because to make it really work, you need to resize the evap and condensor too.

A heater core is a small radiator that uses heat from the engine by plumbing into the coolant system. It is used to heat air, not cool. Hence the name heater core.

The virtues of one R12 replacement vs another have nothing to do with this topic.
