Argosy 20' MH-Has anyone done a 4 Wheel Drive Conversion?

I am in the process of restoring my 20' Argosy MH. I am in the initial stage of due diligence in trying to find out if a 4x4 conversion is possible and what the process and cost might be.

Any direction would be appreciated.

Best,
JB

Convert a P30 chassis to 4 wheel drive? Lots of luck. I think you might be better off with figuring out how to put the old body on a new chassis. At any rate, whatever you did would be major expensive and a labor of love.

You will have to fabricate all of your own brackets and mounts for frt. end, transfer case, and steering linkages. If you are a fabricator and handy with a welder it should not be out of the realm of possibility. I would look at 2.5 ton military axles and running a detached transfer case. Use a hydraulic steering setup and that takes a lot of steering issues out of the equation. Depending on how good you are at finding deals I would think you could by most parts needed for less than 5 grand plus quite a few hours of labor. Sound like a really cool project.

It wouldn't be a very simple thing to do that's for sure. I would go the route of adding the axle to the chassis as opposed to taking the body off and throwing it onto a 4x4 chassis. If I were to try and get parts for this conversion I would look at the Topkick/C series GM trucks for possible parts.

Cheers
Tony

Changing out chassis sounds simpler but you would have to look at how many items are custom fitted in and under chassis, on mine storage bins, holding tanks, lp gas, door placement area.
Easiest would be to determine which chassis was used. buy one with 4 wheel drive and transfer the parts you need, if the chassis is the same as the two wheel drive chassis.

Looks like GM started offering 4WD in the Topkick / Kodiak series in 2004 or 5:

Road Test: GM Kodiak/Chevrolet Kodiak 4x4

This sounds like an awesome idea for someone that is more of an off road camper. Best of luck and please post pictures and information! I would love to see how you did it and how well it turns out.

.....on a related note I have been toying with the idea of doing the Argosy version of this,

with my 28' donor Argosy. Still trying to work out how much could be removed from the chassis though.....
