22FB meets a Semi
This happened yesterday in Ft. Worth, TX. A 22FB was rear ended by a semi. Rolled and tucked the back end neatly into the bathroom. But, it looks to still be towable. Just not livable...

The trailer probably saved the tow vehicle occupants . . .

"Officials have indicated that major injuries were suffered by at least two victims involved who were quickly rushed to a nearby trauma center for immediate medical care. No further details have been made available as this story is still developing and being investigated by DPS."
The Airstream probably softened the blow, but a semi going highway speed can cause some bad whiplash IMO.
Prayers for the victims.

No. Not ours. Just reporting what others saw.

A colleague of mine happened by before the semi was removed and sent me this. Oh, and it's not towable, you can see in the first photo (without the semi) that the tanks and the aft part of the frame are sitting on the ground and I'm guessing the a-frame is torqued WAY to the street-side direction.

If the owners were towing with their propane on to keep frig cold, couldn't an impact like this blow up the Airstream?

I was told many years ago that it is against the law to drive with your propane tanks open. For this reason, I always turn mine off and run the fridge on battery while towing.

Not unless there was a catastrophic propane leak and a spark to start the fire IMO. If a propane line was ruptured, it is likely that the propane regulator's safety feature [which shuts off gas flow, in the event of a sudden drop in pressure] kicked in. The propane tanks do not appear to have been damaged IMO.

I don't think this is accurate . . . could you please provide a citation for a law like this?
Thanks,
Peter

1) there are a few places in the US where this is true... some tunnels and ferries come to mind. Otherwise this is false.
2) Unless you've replaced your refrigerator, battery power provides no cooling in a 2018 Airstream trailer's refrigerator.

Looks like the semi company just bought those folks a new Airstream. I hope the owners do not have long lasting injuries and are well compensated. If not, I would be out for blood.

I think you're right, Peter. This has come up on other discussions. Other than on some ferries and in some tunnels, I haven't ever seen anyone able to provide evidence of an actual law prohibiting driving with a propane fridge on.

Have read that the propane fridge is prohibited in enclosed tunnels and only in certain states.
I do wonder if the propane fridge is a problem when I go to refuel the TV. But it is a passing wonder since I continue to do it.
Back to the collision. Had the semi hit an SOB, the wood and debris would have been all over the road...likely only the trailer frame would have survived. See how neat the AS is. Like stepping on an aluminum can.
But it is till a total loss and I too hope the owners are faring well and can get a new one to replace it.

Your OPD valves on the propane tanks automatically shut off if there is a sudden loss of downstream pressure causing excessive flow. That is why you have to open them slowly to use them so as to avoid the above.

The Peterbilt looks okay!
The second photo shows the tow vehicle jackknifed around the other side of the AS. I'll bet the injuries occurred from being snapped sideways.
Jeez, that's a sobering feeling.

Owner posted on another forum, apparently the husband was taking the Bambi in for service when he was hit. He’s beat up and sore but apparently OK. He was alone when it happened.

22FB meets a Semi
Good that he’s doing ok. This is one of those worst case scenarios we worry about. I run with light on always, but the cynical among us say that just gives drunks a better aim point...
