Propane Fire rings on the teat

Hey folks,
I impulsively bought a propane fire ring for, well, atmosphere probably more than heat outside, but I was reluctant to buy the propane bottle to go with it because I'm miserly on space. Is there a safe and acceptable means of hooking it up to the big tank on my motor home? Could just ask the propane guy if there's an adapter but I though I'd better check with you first.

Oh, OK, sorry, I was referring to whether I could add another suckling appliance to the litter of fridge, stove-top, and onboard heaters that are already drawing on the Mother propane tank. Has anyone added a use like the fire ring to the ones that are factory-installed? And if so, what's the best way?

Hello We started using the outside propane fireplace in 2001 and love it. We take it everywhere and set it up almost every night if it isn't to hot out. We had the service department put and out side propane port in the middle of the 27FB and a 20 foot hose. We put in it on the outside carpet and under the awning. It is just part of what we do now.

There are different types of gas appliances used outside. One is a high pressure system, the other a low pressure system. On your Airstream after the tank and regulator, you have low pressure lines but high pressure is still available at the tank.

So, depending on which system your "fire ring" uses you would have differing connections. A good propane dealer might be the best guide for you. Also, some good RV dealerships may also have experience to add the proper system you need.

This is a safety item, and more advice is probably not wise to give. Too many things can go wrong.

My “fire dancer” came with its own regulator with the 10 foot hose...I have hooked it once direct to the propane tanks on the trailer...but it puts you in an awkward place for the campfire.

I carry instead a 20lb tank I use for camping for my firedancer for easy flexible location choice and it is not heavy for me....plus I use it for my gas weber grill now...

As far as other adapters and such so as to bypass the removing of the lines from the AS, not sure....my AS has an accessible port, but it is for perhaps some versions of propane grill hoses, but it does not fit the firedancer...it only fits the standard fitting of the 20lb tank...probably could purchase an adapter for that fitting if you have something like that on the AS already.....

How long is your hose to your fire ring? Its a pain to be tethered to the AS tanks in my personal opinion unless you have a longer hose.

Thanks you guys, and yes, 10 feet would be too short, considering that we tend to sit on the curb side of the coach when camped. I suppose if we were boondocking and sitting down the hill by the lake (or whatever), we'd wish we had an independent propane supply, but having the option to just tie it in to the main tank would save a substantial amount of storage space and would be fine for most of our current purposes. I'll talk a propane pro to see about the options and the high v. Low pressure stuff

The propane rings go not generate the kind of BTUs that a wood fire dies, but then wood fires vary a lot too, depending on the wood. I'll still bring a sweater.

The safest would be a low pressure system. Also if you get a leak it is a lot less dangerous. It may limit the amount of BTU's you can get out of your fire ring.

We use our portable grille off one of the main tanks using a simple adaptor.

I have the adapter Birdmaestro is using and am in the process of removing it and replacing it with a low pressure system.

There have been problems with liquid propane condensing in the hose overnight. High pressure hose systems are prone to this.

The liquid propane can then cause the regulator to freeze up and fail.

Think what would happen if that Chinese made high pressure hose blew and the entire contents of that 30lb cylinder were emptied into an area with an open flame. What if the dog chews a hole in it. What if it gets too close to the fire and it melts.

On the low pressure, side you might have a small flame but not enough gas to cause a real problem.

The regulator for my unit is right at the point if attachment - a longer high pressure hose would make me nervous too :O

Seems to me you could carry both but leave the low- pressure one connected most of the time? The problem with the fire rings is that they don't throw off a lot if heat. I don't know if I was just being miserly with the propane or whether it really can't burn a lot. I'd have to look at the fire ring more carefully. Of course, it also takes a while for the volcanic rock to heat up, like a wood fire, so it may be more a matter of time and how much heat they can absorb. I'm not an engineer, so I don't know.

Propane pits will not by a long shot put out similar btu compared to wood fire - but for example - 2 weekends ago camping - it was perfect amount of heat and when hot it's nice too

What are the regs on the fire rings relative to fires. Some places don't want you to have fires does that include fire rings? Sounds like you will go through a lot of propane with one of these. I guess a Costco membership would be a good idea. I hate paying $40 for $15 worth of propane.
