Unhappy hot water tank

I have a 1975 Overlander model, 10 gal tank, can get gas to thermostat but cannot get pilot light to ignite, what am I doing wrong?

Clean the pilot orifice.

depending on age it might be better to replace pilot assembly with a new one.. they get old and rusty over time.

We have them on our carpet clearing trucks hot water tankless heaters. the pilot get clogged and the tips can get bent out of shape from the heat.

they are not a big cost but it can help prevent problems in the future.

Mine HWT will light, but not stay on. Recently replaced the original 1985 regulator. Any ideas of why it won't stay lit?

if you are meaning you can light the pilot but when you release the knob the flame goes out, then you may have a bad thermocouple. they are easy to replace and only cost some 18 bucks at lowes or homedepot.. be sure to take old one with you to store to get some length.

Did the unit run ok before the regulator replacement? could be bad reg. or not set a correct pressure. (most are OK) or you have low or no gas in LP tank.

Carl:
the HWT ran fine until the glass in the regulator broke; necessitating the replacement. The tanks are full and one is turned on. One interesting fact, the igniter continued to spark even after the flame came on...and then went out.

glass in regulator is a new one on me.. Most regulators i have ever seen are metal and have a rubber diaphragm in the middle.

where is the glass in the regulator..??

guess i don't know how to post images.

is this an IPI control?.. which is a non standing or Intermittent Pilot Ignition system.

it starts a pizeo sparker and turns on pilot gas system, when pilot lights it will continue to click for a second till the thermocouple get hot enough to hold safety valve open signaling the controller there is an established pilot.. then the controller will monitor for signal to start burner as in a water heater, or like what i work on gas logs.

When the controller gets signal to turn off burner the system will shut down every thing, pilot and all till next time burner is needed to operate.

I was in a class recently on IPI systems.. seem the average LP pilot can burn some 28 gallons of LP over a years time just by it self, so most manf are moving to the IPI system especially on LP.
