Changeover regulator help

54 Flying Cloud has what appears to be the original regulator - see attached pic. Not sure how the changeover/selector works. I have one tank which is empty and one which is not. There is a large knob on the front of the regulator. I think both tanks are currently "selected" because if I disconnect the empty tank and open the valve on the other tank propane comes out the disconnected line. If I leave both tanks connected but close the valve on the empty tank, propane flows to my appliances.
Questions:
1. How do I select only one tank?
2. Does this regulator have "auto changeover" capability?
3. If I decide to replace it, what model is recommended?

I have already bought aluminum tanks to replace the rusty steel ones

Personally I think a new regulator is a worthwhile investment of $30-$40 and lets you have a straightforward changeover mechanism. If it were an auto-switching regulator, the empty side should close when it switches so you can refill the empty tank without shutting off your systems, though I would select the full cylinder as the primary before disconnecting the empty one.

The regulator on mine was probably less than 10 years old when I bought the trailer, and it didn't provide sufficient gas pressure for the fridge to stay lit while traveling. While troubleshooting that I bought a water manometer to check the gas pressure at the appliances and it was low (less than 9" of water when a minimum of 11" is specified) so I swapped out the regulator for a newer one and haven't had any problems with that since.

My experience is that regulators last about 20 years max, then it is time to replace them. I would not mess with the one you have if I were you.
