I purchased a pair of 40 pound Worthington Aluminum LP tanks for my Overlander prior to having it polished and Plasticoated at P & S Trailer Service in Helena, OH. Part of the polishing job included polishing the tanks.
If you are a do-it-yourselfer and enjoy dirty work, it isn't particularly difficult to polish the tanks (the area around the valves will require quite a bit of hand work). I have had the opportunity to watch several demonstrations, and one thing that I learned from one demonstration was that a wooden support cradle made the process easier to manage - - the cradle was designed such that the tank was fully supported by the carpet covered wood radle at the top ring and bottom ring - - the cradle held the tanks secure allowing the use of the typical power-tools for polishing. It is one demonstration that I didn't photograph for some reason.
When the Ruths polished my coach, they didn't Plasticoat the tanks as they felt that the Plasticoat would be too easily damaged with the removal and reinstallation maneuvering when the tanks are refilled. Thus far it hasn't be a tremendous problem - - I hand polish the tanks the coat them with Walbernize when the coach is Walbernized (twice yearly).
I have attached a photo of the tanks following their annual Walbernizing about two years ago.
Good luck with your project!
