Very nice work. I bought 500, 1000 and 1200 grit wet/dry so I will start with that. Also, I am going to the restoration rally and was wondering if I could hook up with you or Brad prior for a check because this will be my first trip ever as an adult. My A/S is at 14th st and Dunlap, would you or Brad be closer?

We are about the same distance. I am at Central and Union Hills and Brad is near Greenway and 40th Ave. We can set something up next week after the Dead Horse Rally and Brad gets back from Hawaii.

I thought you were in Surprise???

Recertification

Nobody in NM has ever mentioned a need to have my tanks "recertified". Could this be a state reg that varies from state to state?

Tank inspection is a Federal Mandate. Here is a brief description of how it works.
Quote:
Cylinders are subject to recertification (also known as requalification) twelve years from their date of manufacture and every five years after that. For example, a cylinder manufactured in January of 2000 will have to be recertified in January of 2012 meaning if you take your bottle to the propane company in April of 2012 to be refilled, it will have to be requalified by authorized personnel before it can be filled. The recertification process is simple and does not take too long to complete. Think of cylinder recertification as an inspection similar to that of your car. A vehicle has to be inspected annually so that it may continue to operate safely on the road. Similarly, a propane cylinder must be inspected so that it may continue to operate safely in LP Gas service.

Nope, Federal since we all drive on Interstate Highways.

Might as well be. In truth, the recommendations are written by the National Fire Protection Assocation, which puts out a manual covering all aspects of propane safety. The latest version is NFPA 58, with the next major revicion cycle scheduled for 2010. (This is not casual reading material!) The various states generally accept all or most parts of whatever the NFPA recommends, subject to their own revisions, additional recommendations, and so forth. In general, though, if it's in the NFPA manual, it's national, including especially the parts about recertification of and OPDs on DOT cylinders (e.g., the vertical bottles on RVs, barbeques, and the like).

I have had 3 or 4 70s vintage tanks changed to OPD valves. Maybe they were recertified as a matter of course. Never had anybody balk at refilling. Are recertified tanks restamped? How can I tell if they are recertified?

Is there an sister agency of the mattress tag police lying in wait for me?

Tanks are supposed to be checked every time they are filled. Technically, if a tanks cert. has expired they can not refill it, period. Today there are so many different filling stations, most attended by folks who either don't care or were never properly trained you can get around the cert. I make it a habit to always have my tanks, old or new filled at the local filling station which is a major seller of different gases and supplies. They always check my tanks for integrity and also alway purge them which no one ever does any more. Yes, the tanks must be stamped witht the new date.

There are three methods of recertification, but by far the most common is visual recertification, adding five years to your cylinder. If it's been visually recertified, then it'll have "E" plus a new date stamped into the collar.
