TV 2003 Chevy S10?

Hi,

I'm completely new to the community and am beginning to "window shop" for Airstreams. I have a 2003 Chevy S10, (4 cylinder engine, rear wheel drive, stick shift), and I was wondering if this would be an appropriate tow vehicle for a trailer-- and if so, what type of trailer I should look for?

I'm looking at trailers for "shorter term" full-time living options for the West Coast. (Meaning full-time living for 4-6 months chunks of time.) I currently live in Chicago, so the trailer would need to be towed across country a few times--I'd be keeping it in Ohio though.

Any advice/suggestions on where to start?

Thank you!!

Hi and welcome!

At Ask.com, an answer there suggests 1600# max towing capacity for the 2003 S10. I don't believe there's an Airstream that light.

You could likely tow a small pop-up camper or maybe one of those sweet T@b teardrop trailers (not sure of their weight but they might do the trick).

Lots of threads here about appropriate tow vehicles (and if you ask 10 people you're going to get 37 opinions so enjoy the reading &#128515.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but an S10 is not a suitable tow vehicle for anything heavier than a small pop-up camper.

Something like a small fiberglass egg ( Scamp for instance ) could be a good matchup for a S10.

I had a S10 with 4cyl/stick with a fiberglass topper back in 2002. While it was an OK daily driver it didn't have much power. I took one long trip with it from DFW to San Diego and back in 2003 carrying a light load of RC model airplanes. When I hit the mountain grades just east of San Diego it was very anemic going over the grade.

I've owned a 3500lb Casita trailer. It would not be able to tow that trailer except to move it a short distance.

Suggestions on where to start? Like everyone else said... if you plan on towing ANY Airstream... start with a BIGGER truck...
