My Tundra 2017 Pro. works great. I set my setting on 8. Trailer will break the truck.

We have also have a 2017 Tundra pulling 30’ International and have not experienced any problems. Brakes got a good workout coming down from Raton Pass when a big black bear jumped in front of us. Everything worked great!

2016 with 50k miles, all towing. No issues with the built in brake controller.

Harness came in yesterday, so did the install last night. Very pleased with the fit and position of the controller.
RPWRS, thank you for the comment on requiring tow mode, that could have been my issue as rarely choose to use tow mode on the interstates, but on the back roads, that would have made a lot of sense.

Am very comfortable with the Tekonsha P3, so will have to make a test drive with the trailer in a couple weeks and see how it works.

Just curious (and probably covered in another thread here), but for those with a P3, what boost level and power setting are you using?
My recollection since initial set up was B1 (tow vehicle weighs more than trailer) and power level of 3.

I have a 2016 Tundra. I was brand new to the truck and to pulling my 22' FB Sport. So I wasn't sure what I was supposed to get from the factory controller. But between the many negative reviews online and the pretty unconvincing tests I did with it, I decided to put in a P3. I've been happy I did. Just feel a lot safer with it.

we have the P3 Tekonsha installed in our 2016 Audi Q5

after CANAM london ONb, tuned it for us. it performs 100% perfectly

tuning is a must for these so that the setting are correct for YOUR size, weight and length of AS on YOUR vehicle

I owned a 2015 Tundra without a factory brake controller. Before I purchased our 27’ Airstream I researched brake controllers to find the best controller that integrated into the truck’s systems. I purchased a DirecLink that plugs into the truck’s computer and knows what the truck is doing. I loved it. There were adjustments for normal speed, low speed, and emergency braking.

For my 2014 Tundra Platinum, Prodigy P3 controller settings that working best with my 2018 FC 25FB are settings: B1 at 5.5 power level.

Question Toyota brake controller

Hmmmm...We tow with a 2017 Tundra and have had absolutely no problem with the trailer brakes. They have worked very well on long downhills eastern Oregon and Utah. No idea why ours are fine and yours aren't.

Wish I knew also. The IBC was one of the main features that I was excited to have. But the quality of the mount for the P3 in the Tundra is close.

Are you able to lock up the wheels at 25mph?

I am not and every time we have been out, I felt like the truck brakes were also covering the trailer. On our last ride home, we had some emergency braking going into stopped traffic ahead and it felt like there was little to no braking assistance compared to what I had with the P3.

Heading out this weekend, so will report back on any change with the new set-up.

For four years I've used zero boost on the flats, B1 on the minor hills, and B2 in the Rockies. B3 would be too much. Power setting 6.0.

I came across an unusual discussion on the Prodigy P3 brake controller in the Tundra Talks Forums. Apparently a 2013 Tundra owner has been pulling a 27' TT for four long years; thinking his Tow-Haul mode automatically engaged his factory brake controller. He was quite shocked when he found out that his Tundra lacked a factory brake controller all those years. Because in fact; he towed about 42,000 miles and never had any towing or braking problems during all those years. Perhaps the Tundra brakes are much stronger than we think.

Ha! More like, no clue how a combined rig brakes.

“Tune” a controller?. Sure, when it’s an inferior design. There’s a reason Airstream only sells the DirecLink controller.

A P3 is adequate. Just good enough. A long ways from best.

A pickup has a hard enough time stopping itself (requires ABS, unlike cars). Roll control and stability controls mask its inherent inferiority.

If any of you had pulled a trailer with discs and a great controller you’d know this. Even more so had you chosen a better TV.

The basic test is whether the combined rig stops faster than when solo. Start there.

Yes, the brakes on a Tundra are very good, no question. But, when the TV is doing all the braking, they will wear out faster than they should and if the trailer is not braking at all, steep declines can become big problems. Think about the physics when the TV is braking on a curve and the trailer is not.

And, as far as SloMover is concerned, I don’t think trashing a prodigy controller will get you far on this forum. Stick with how much better a Hensley is. People will listen to that.

My P3 controller works great on my '08 Tundra. Pulling either my '74 Argosy 26' Gvwr 6,200#. Or my '15 Nash 22H Gvwr 7,000#.
Using B2 with a gain of 6.5. When in a normal stop situation the readout is just above 2.
With the manual control I have no problem stopping the TV and trailer combo.
I only use manual to varify the trailer brakes are working.
Very pleased with the P3.

Tundra Integrated Brake Controller

Ditto. 2007 22’ International CCD and a Tacoma. ProPride and a P3 with similar settings. Combo stops straight, fast and in control. No bumps, no panics, no white knuckles.

Admittedly I have carefully learned how to set up and properly adjust all this stuff. I don’t just, “kick the tires, light the fires, and launch” like some seem to, based on what I see screaming past in a wobbly SOB rig.

I figure I’ll see them again, in a pile of assorted wreckage off the side of the road...

So is it safe to say that if the TV is a Tundra with the prodigy 2 or 3 it works well, and the Toyota Tundra IBC does not?

Let's just say many Toyota owners have found the Prodigy P3 a significant safety upgrade over their Tundra factory IBC. Toyota has been making Tundra trucks since year 2000. But it was not until 2016 that Toyota included factory brake controllers in any of its product line. Many Prodigy P2 and P3 controllers were installed by Toyota and Lexus owners before 2016 and they were very happy with trailer braking performance.
