Fun thread

Though a commercial pilot-- having kids made me realized that I don't want to travel so far from home. After a wonderful stint as a full time father I found work at our local art museum where they call me a "Preparator". The monetary sacrifices have been painful but while my boys still want me around I'll never give up riding bikes to school in the morning and visiting them for pizza Fridays.

I'm the Fleet Manager and Driver for a local Meat, Seafood, and Provisions Supplier here in South Central Pennsylvania. I drive a delivery truck every day and spend a lot of other time keeping track of the maint., insurance, driver reports, D.O.T. reports, inspections, safety regulations, fuel tax logs, and any other facet that deals with our fleet. Including running the trucks too and from service appointments, and keeping all of the drivers from ruining the $80k trucks. Researching all new truck purchases, and supervising the building of a specialized refrigerated truck, which usually takes about 6 months to complete after it's ordered.

I'm only 24 so I have a long way to go before I can retire. At the rate that the company I work for is growing, in a few years my Fleet Management responsibilites will become a full time position and I'll be weened off of the road.

Exclamation Hardest job in the world

I'm a night RN on a med/surg floor, working three nights a week. My husband is a teacher in a private school. But by FAR the hardest job we have is raising the six children. Talk about a lot of work The laundry, homework, cooking, baseball, basketball, dance, doctor's appointments, dental appointments, bill paying, baths, cleaning, birthday parties, taxiing,toddler-chasing---it never ends! People are always asking me, "How do you work outside the home and have six chidren?" and I always respond, "I don't know how anybody with this many children can handle NOT working outside the home!!" Work is my break. We are far from retirement but do look foward to some major road trips (especially one to AK in a few summers) with all the kids over the next few years. My husband is driving to MN (from NH) with all the kids this summer to visit his family for a month while I stay here and work (hey, somebody has to finance his travels <g>) What a man!!!

Tom.
Tom, I think I have you by a couple of years. I started repairing cars and trucks in 1972, back before the ASE existed...
I work for a very large tire manufacturing company, and auto repair shop. I have several other titles, which do nothing to put food on the table, but sound impressive when you spout them off to other folks. Senior technician (I'm the oldest guy still doing this in my district), Safety coordinator, Equipment supervisor, and warranty claim auditer.

I worked as a printer from 1971 to 1999 when I was no longer needed as a printer I transferred to the art department and work until 2003 as a graphic designer. I retired in 2003. Early.
Tom was a mechanic for the DOT eventually working for the DOT commissioner until his retirement in 2002.
Today we winter in Georgia and spend summers in our Airstream in Colorado.
I cook, clean and wrangle cats.

I have two full-time jobs, work as a Computer Sales Engineer for a company and also have a full time Hot Air Balloon Ride business in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. If you saw the Dec. issue of the Blue Beret, that was one of my hot air balloons on the front cover we put up for the rally this past fall.

I hope to continue running around Pennsylvania for the next couple of years selling corrugated boxes, unfortunately, they don't pack Airstreams in boxes!

After that, I hope to join my lovely wife Jan in sharing our retirement years touring the country in our Airstream. Jan deservedly retired last year after 35 years of teaching second grade.

Kudos on the 500 posts

you are either a sponge for knowledge about Airstreams or you are a wealth of Airstream Knowledge.

That is a loaded question...When I am not playing on the computer, surfing for the perfect Vintage Trailer or restoring this or that my serious responsible life has seen me do 15 years hard time with a Provincial Amateur Sport (5yrs) as an Executive Director & (8yrs) as their Technical Director. Then moved on to six years as the Training and Education Manager for Kwik Kopy Printing Canada Corporation. Best of all I took over my Dad's publishing business 5 years ago and now work about 3-4 months a year publishing 2 books. Sure does make it easy to get my vacation requests approved - just have to bribe myself with a bit of chocolate. But it is the Board meetings that are tough - we can go around for hours trying to decide what to do

Peter on the other hand the poor working stiff - does the 4hr daily commute 4 days a week for the City of Toronto - in the Parks & Rec Dept. as their Promotions and Communications Officer. Although he has held several positions during his 22 year stint - he is looking forward to his retirement just a short 8 years away.

I am hoping to expand the publishing business with the intent on Peter going part time - so he can ease into retirement and do lots more work on the Trailer - work as in hook up and drive off into the sun set for a few days everyweek!!!!!

ps good thing I don't proof my own stuff - can't spell worth beans! actually it is that my fingers can not keep up with my brain....

I am an engineer by training, having a Masters in Electrical Engineering. Before retiring a couple of years ago, I was in technical sales/management in the Electric Power Industry for a number of years. Before that, I was a career Air Force Officer.
Now, I am quite involved in the stock market, trying to keep what I have - an maybe make a few $ in the process.

Your 500th and here's to my FIRST! Born and raised on a Cattle Ranch in Northern Wyoming I was very proud to become a Journeyman Cowboy. Then after earning an engineering degree and completing 35 very rewarding years in management at Caterpillar Inc. I have now retired with excellemt health and a broad range of interests and hobbies. I have now come full circle, and as often as I can, I am proud to be a Cowboy again!

Best wishes,

What do you do for work

Congrats on reaching the great 500. That IS posts and not race miles? Right? It is interesting to read of such a wide field of diversity we have on the forum. Probably what keeps me coming back here almost every evening. I like to think I have the most demanding work of those listed & that is to look busy when the wife is around. Now that's not easy for an old guy like myself. For 33 years I worked in the natural gas field, assigned in various job classications, from ditchdigger to line manager with responsibility for operations over several cities and several thousand customers. Unlike Anne I have no degree in nursing, however Endoscopy could also be my field of expertise. It is one in which I have and continue to be actively involved. I am proud to say that I am a loooooong time stomach cancer survivor and it is the milestone I ( and the wife)worked the hardest to achive. After 30 years of toil, my wife has but 20 working days till retirement as a county Financial Worker. At last the world now appears at our door step and wouldn't you know gasoline is near $2.50 a gallon.
Best,

Work, work, work

I am an engineer and patent attorney and commercial pilot by training, and manage a sales contracts organization for a large electronics test and measurement company in Silicon Valley... Like most, would rather be wondering about places to stay on cross-country Airstream adventure than pondering how much harm Carly Fiorina did to former employer and patriarch of High Tech - HP... Children are young adults and living and working in southern Calif, and Dianne does homemaking plus 4 part time paid jobs and 1 volunteer job as pink lady in local hospital maternity section.. Someday tech stocks will make a comeback, and there'll be more time for toys and adventures..

I have worked as a dentist at the local VA Medical Center for a very rewarding 30 years. I avoided becoming an 'entitlement drain' on our gummint last Labor Day -- still spending too much time at work. Mebbe a year from now... (Remember me on April 15th.... )

Susie is a social worker in mental health and needs the release provided by traveling. For ten years we have volunteered leading Sierra Club outings to Hawaii most every year. We spent half of February on Maui leading a trip focused on helping a local group clear an archaeological site. That's hard work so I'd better get this Argosy project pulled together!

We met at the University of Minnesota while I was rebelling against my Texas roots. My great-great-great-great-great grandfather wishes he could dream of Airstreaming from the Texas State Cemetery in Austin.
