Maybe more prudent to brand it like he did and include a circle slash. Then you can use it and still deliver a protest message. The purpose of non-violent protest is to deliver a message, change behavior, and not damage anyone or anything. Pat

In his post he seems contrite. Let's see if he follows through on his pledges. I hope he does.

I remember when a climber, heavily endorsed by Patagonia, climbed up on Delicate Arch in the NP. And Patagonia initially defended him. Have not set foot in one of their stores or gave them $1 since.

You can make a difference.
He says he is under investigation by the:
U.S. DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR
BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT.
All the emails for all the officers are on the site
Go to contact us, then National office.
Lets not let him get away with this.

Not something I would do. Not exactly the crime of the century either. Be interesting to see if some type of charges are actually made. I am guessing not. Juvenile behavior from a suppose to be adult is more the way it seems. It happens. Frequently. Maybe the public shaming will help. Personally I would still buy the products if I wanted them.
I have no idea what the "trading plates" thing is about or if it is even true.

Just to be clear, this was not in Arches National Park, but on BLM land outside of Moab, a beautiful 110 high arch called Corona Arch. I have hiked to it a few times. I'm hoping BLM takes action, if this had been in the National Park, you can be sure the NPS would be coming down hard on him.
It was stupid, selfish, and tone deaf. How a grown man would think that it's OK to scrape graffiti in such a beautiful place in the back country is beyond me. It's not like he was a kid being stupid. He's an adult.
His 'apology' letter was emtpy in my opinion, and only written because he got caught.

I hope they pursue this and investigate the 2016 5 foot Anderson to see if he was in the area to do that carving also.

Andersen Manufacturing: “When only the best will do.”
This was not the best. His customers deserve to see a better representation of that promise. His kids and the employees do too. A life change to stewardship from appologies makes for a much better best. Pat

$5K fine is hardly sufficient penalty for doing this sort of damage, IMO. Mandatory prison and aggressive enforcement with hidden cameras might catch a couple of perps and make this sort of behavior less attractive to others.
I can't help but feel Ryan Andersen is only sorry he got caught being stoopid...and thinks we are also if we fall for his "contrite" msg. I hope BLM makes an example of him ...for the benefit of all.
(Am I being harsh and unforgiving? When I think of the times I've heard/read people say of ex-cons that "they've paid their debt to society" after their prison-term... it gives me a sense of disbelief. There is no "debt" to society built into the penal system. How does one "repay" for the murdered child or any other crime which cannot be un-done? Did it bring the child back? That debt is forever. Simple fact. The penalty is only punishment in the hope of deterrence and unless the penalty is severe... the behavior will not be discouraged in others. When was the last time you heard of an execution? It happened midnite behind closed walls and done "without pain or suffering" to the perp... as if that were the perp's concern for the victim when the crime was committed. If executions are to be a deterrent...they must be executed in public. And any pain/suffering should be commensurate with the method... hanging is my recommendation. In this case, Andersen should have to perform hard, corrective labor in view of the public and on the BLM lands commensurate with his crime as well as a prison term. If vengance is the Lord's...so is forgiveness. It ain't my job to do it.)

Andersen
His apology page is annoyingly lame. Appears lawyer prepped to display remorse and restitution, which may be advantageous when it comes to sentencing.
I'd rather see a photo of the two of them in orange jumpsuits and shackles. These are not the kind of people we want in our society.
I hope the BLM/Park Service has enough teeth to thoroughly prosecute this crime and investigate the other ANDERSEN carving, which had to have been premeditated, as there are no natural tools in the vicinity with the ability to carve that deeply, that would support someones spontaneous inspiration to vandalize the Arch.
No one pulled a Swiss Army knife out of their pocket to do that. Looks like, with premeditation, someone packed in a hammer and chisel in order to intentionally deface the Arch with the ANDERSEN name.
Fines cannot affect them significantly, Hard Jail Time might awaken them. If they are responsible for defacing other monuments, they're a pathetic, sick family.
When convicted of guilt in court, in support of our National Treasures and acknowledgment of the disrespectful nature of this crime, I'd like to see the LDS Elders donate all the ANDERSEN family's tithing to NPS restoration until the second coming.
This is NOT the place!

Do not much like the idea of "make an example" of someone as a deterrent. Justice is supposed to be "equal" and to fit the crime. The deterrent is supposed to be the certainty that you will be caught and punished. Not the idea that if you are prominent the punishment will be outrageous because of that.
It is a big leap to just assume he wrote the big Anderson.
