PressurePro Tire Pressure Monitoring System

Well, we took the plunge and are now a national distributor for the Advantage PressurePro Tire Pressure Monitoring System.
After a couple of blow outs and expensive repairs, it just made sense to take the line since we already have an RV related business.
I'm not here to tell you that you need a system but should you decide, the investment is less than most insurance deductibles and the piece of mind is priceless, especially for the vintage folks when panels and parts are getting hard to come by.
Anyway, here is my shameless plug for our new product line and if you already have one, please tell us how you like it.
Pricing is pretty much set across the board so there are no real discounts out there. The technology is pretty new and will be standard on vehicles after 2008 due to the TREAD act passed by congress. Remember Firestone?
So there is no confusion, Doran Manufacturing also markets the same product, at the same price packaged with their logo but it is the same as the original PressurePro systems we carry and manufactured by Advantage PressurePro.
Happy camping!
Randy

Metal Valve Stems?

Randy:
I have been on the edge of buying this system becuase my trailer is a single axle, and so I don't have the mental comfort that the 2 or 3 axle people have.

On other threads people have made comments about switiching to metal valve stems, to avoid failure of the rubber stems, from the extra mass of the pressure monitors. The hassle of checking out what it would take to get my valve stems switched to metal as been the main factor in putting off this purchase.

As a distributor, do you have any info or advice that you can pass along? The last thing I want to do is just install the pressure monitor on the rubber stems, only to hasten a tire pressure failure. So, what's the inside scoop on switching to metal stems - nice to do, gotta do, or doesn't really matter?

If metal stems are a good idea, can any tire shop do the job? Can metal stems be fitted to any Airsream wheel (mine is a 2005 16' CCD)?

Thanks for any insights you can share
Bob

Hi Bob,
I won't proclaim to be a wheel expert because I'm just not. I do know what I've run on numerous trucks and RVs over the years and whether it was Mags, other steel or wood, I've always preferred metal stems.
Having said that, my car hauler has rubber stems and have been less hassle then the mags on my 81 Airstream because they got bent so I think people sometimes over analyze what is required and nice to have. Metal stems are generally considered a better option for obvious reasons but that is not a major concern because the systems work on the same schrader valve threads. The "mass" of the sensor is a non issue on rubber stems and surprised that even came up. 2/3 of an ounce. I rebalanced mine and only one of four wheels needed weight, 1/2 ounce but it probably needed it anyway.
If I were buying new tires, I would probably ask for metal stems but if I had tires with existing rubber valve stems, I would not toss money into having them changed out.
You sort of answered the question in that it doesn't matter which you have as long as you can detect a leak.

Just a couple of observations here.

A rubber valve stem is not rated to take over 45-50psi and should be used for passenger car tires only. The first thing I did when I got my 19CCD was to change the stems to metal, as the pressure required is 65psi and the valve stems are a prime source of air depletion leading to tire failure.

Another detail that most folks don'r realize is the use of tire sealants. I have been using a water based tire sealant called Ride-On for several years. I add this product to every tire that I have....trailer, motorcycle, cars, trucks, etc. and have yet to get a blow-out. It does not cause any deterioration of the rim like other sealants do. In fact, I had a nail and screw in the rear tire on one of my motorcycles and never knew it because it never lost any air!

I don't sell this product and have nothing to do with the company. It is just a great product! www.ride-on.com.

Randy,
We've had a couple of tire issues that could have cost us dearly in repairs to our Airstream had we not been using Pressure Pros. When I was told about Pressure Pros, it just made sense to use them since you cannot see what's going on back there. We feel more comfortable having them on our tow vehicle as well. The units are easy to install and do nothing to the balance of your wheels. I can highly recommend this product.

Another product that is well worth consideration are Centramatics. These plate shaped units mount over your wheel hubs prior to mounting your wheels and continuously balance your wheels as you roll along. The units are inexpensive and easy to install.

I have to agree with Lew in that metal valve stems are prefered given the choice, point being that the sensors don't know, care or cause them to fail any sooner and really suggests a reason to have something to monitor them with if they are inferior.
I wouldn't suggest everybody running out to change their valve stems to metal either but if I were replacing tires, I'd probably change them over at the same time. Thanks Lew.

Pop, I went to the Centramatics home page and watched their demo video. If they work as advertised, it looks like a good product but I honestly had not heard of them before. Thanks for that.

hi lewster and others.....

i like sealants too. there are several products now that are very effective....some vendors have flavors for bikes, atvs, and highway applications...

i'm a fan of 'stans sealant' but slime continues to improve their products

also a user of metal stems, but the statements regarding rubber stems and higher pressures aren't accurate....imo

and i'm pretty sure most 'rubber' stems are now butyl rubber or a silioxane rubber; both will last much longer...

my superduty has rubber valve stems and tires rated to 80psi....and there are 1 or 2 of these roaming the highways.....

my a/s moho had tires rated to 90+ psi and rubber stems....till i changed them to metal 10 years into ownership.

bicycle tires can have pressures greater than 200psi and still have rubber stems....

prehaps a bigger issue than the stem material is the valve innards.....on really high pressure bike tires, presta rather than schraeder are commonly used.

and even metal stems have rubber/butyl o rings that can deteriorate over time...
along with the valve innards...

recently i've seen NEW 2007 airstream trailers with mixtures...
that's right, metal stems on some wheels and rubber on other wheels...
on the same trailer, on the same sides, double and triple axles

cheers
2air'

I DISAGREE WITH THIS STATEMENT!!!

so ok, what i meant to type was the schraeder stems are still rubber but the high pressure prestas are 'em.......metal...with a bit o'rubber inside....

does this qualify as typing 2 oneself?

cheers

good night johnboy....

2air,

You beat me to the punch!! I was going to tell you about the metal presta valves that are imbedded into the rubber tubes. BTW, most road bike tires that I have used over the years have had a max inflation pressure of 125 PSI.

One of our members mentioned the need for a two tire system for those with a single axle Airstream. We added two tire systems to the "RV and Tow" and "Truck and Trailer" monitor systems. Quite frankly, we assumed everyone would want at least four sensors but some new tow vehicles do come with built-in TPMS so there is no need for the tow vehicle sensors in that case.

I bought the Pressure Pro System. I feel certain that it saved me from thousands of dollars of repairs to my trailer as well as furnish me a valuable lesson in tire failure modes.
Wonderful system.

Thanks for commenting on the system. Your comments are better than what I can add. They just work.

For those of you that like country music or big rigs, CMT's "Trick my Truck" has signed on with PressurePro. They will feature the product in one of the upcoming episodes this season. It comes on Friday nights and is replayed several times throughout the week.

I have put about 10,000 miles on the pressure pros on my trailer. I had a major tire failure the first time out and was able to get off the interstate, to the shoulder, before the tire came apart. I recently put them on my new 2006 Dodge Mega Cab and had two valve stem failures, the metal pulled away from the rubber and the entire metal stem came out in one tire. I replaced all the valve stems in the Dodge. Its a wonderful system.

Go to Randy's (68 overlander) website http://www.rvtirepressure.com/ and check it out. You build the system you want by clicking on the more info link for the unit you are looking for. There are various options and your total price will depend on your configuration. You could get 4 sensors for your trailer or 8 and monitor your TV as well.

Still plenty of time for Christmas. Number one aftermarket tire pressure monitoring system in the world and we're just getting started.

I like the system, but I had a problem at first because I put the monitors on to tight. I also had to add a relay in the trailer.

Centramatics

If you like the idea of monitoring your air pressure you may wish to investigate the automatic wheel balancing system from Centramatic. This system is relatively inexpensive and easy to install. Google Centramatic to check it out. We purchased this system after installing Pressure Pros. It just seemed to make good sense. HAPPY TRIALS!
