How do you store your magazines?
We need ideas and suggestions on how our subscribers can best organize, store, protect and display their past issues of Airstream Life magazine. We have explored numerous options but have not yet found the ideal solution.
Please submit any ideas and suggestions. We want a high quality storage device at an affordable price. When we find the right device, we will make it available in our web store.
If you are the first to come up with a really good solution which we decide to employ, you will receive both our heartfelt thanks and a free 1-year subscription for yourself or any person of your choice.
Where better to find good solutions other than among the collective genius of airforums members?
By the way, do you keep your magazines in your home, RV or both?

We store back issues in magazine boxes from the Container Store, leaving the current issue or two at the ready on the coffee table at home. When traveling, we'll take the latest issue to catch up on, but I don't like to leave them in the trailer unattended as they tend to walk away at rallies
The only thing I would change my ways for are "aliuminum" or silver magazine boxes, maybe with an Airstream Life logo riveted on it...that would be cool!

This is what I use for my Model Railroader magazines. They have been around for 60 years, and seem to hold up very well. You can have "Airstream Life" printed on it.

This type of rack is what I use.
They come it cardboard, plastic and steel mesh. Aluminum would be perfect.
My AL rotates from my trailer to my house as the next edition arrives. AL is best read while camping.....

I'd buy a silver/aluminum storage container
Great ideas here, I'd surely buy a silver/aluminum storage container for our Airstream life mags. Right now they are in plastic boxes.
I'd be even more interested if it were possible to have the container seal up or close tightly.

One thing I have found with the cardboard binders, if you stand them on end as designed, the bindings fail, the mags tip down and the corners bend. I have 36 years of MR as proof.
The plastic are worse.
I would go with the metal holders with the screen and lay them flat. The metal frame will hold the weight of the next rack placed on top.
Tom.

Roger -- One magazine storage solution is my username/password protected online subscription to Consumer Reports. The price is exactly the same as print and there is no hard copy. I can access it from any computer anywhere. It is always up to date. But... ASL is too fun to restrict that way. With hard copy I can read in the "necessary", read it on the way to an Airstream event, and leave copies in my Airstream for those rainy camping days.
I've bought magazine binders in the past. They keep everything together but I found it hard to get excited after the first order. 4-sided magazine boxes work for me; eg, top image here. We got some plastic ones at Target and they've worked for years.

We have several magazine collections (antique automobile, Airstream, and business publications). We store all of our magazines in standard four-drawer metal file cabinets. We use expandable file folders (the kind with accordion sides and bottom). We have been using this system for twenty years, and have found it very workable. It keeps the magazines in excellent condition, organozed, and easily accessible.

Another solution is to review each issue, scan the relevant articles, and store in your laptop or external hard drive and then pitch the issue. In that way to can have access while on the road without the space and weight.
I have a number of years of Model Railroader and a slowly expanding collection of Airstream Life that will eventually be scanned and discarded.

extiger---I know folks here will "cringe" but I'm not a saver either. We read through any publications multiple times then pass them on to some one else to enjoy. don't have the time nor space to store or save things anymore. Besides sooner or later someone has to "deal" with them. ---pieman

I store them in my trailer using silver metal mesh upright magazine racks from Target and, at home, in wooden upright magazine rackes from IKEA. The IKEA racks are paintable or stainable too so can be decorated to match your decor. IKEA has a great selection at low prices so you might want to do some competitive surveillance on their website.

Great Magazine!
First of all just let me say how much I enjoy my Magazine. After many years of subscribing to many magazines I finally found one that I read cover to cover.
Usewise, we keep the last 2 in the Bambi and the rest at home. I also saw the magazine racks in Target and was thinking of using one of those. I already bought the CD case and store my 4 beer glasses inside the trailer, they fit perfect. It adds to the coooool factor...

Thanks to everyone for the great responses thus far. This is very helpful information.
The comments about computer storage are well taken. Rich hopes to eventually make all back issues available on CD when the paper copies are gone, just as he has done with the Summer 2005 issue.
Still, I know that there are a lot of readers who, like myself, want to save the hard copies for practical reasons or for posterity. Your input will help us find an appropriate storage container.
Thanks again.

I save only my AL magazines. All the others I toss when I'm finished with them (cut out articles I want to keep and toss the remainder of the mag).
I keep the past issues of AL in silver painted wire mesh magazine holder like the black one in the photo on the first page of this thread. I take the current issue with me in the Airstream when we camp, the others are filed for posterity...my kids or anyone else that may want a complete set dating back to issue #1.

I was surprised to discover that for the price of a publishers custom magazine binder I could have a years worth of magazines hard bound. I had my Argosy manuals bound in a highly appropriate color It cost about $12.
