When we got up this morning, it was -30 degrees. Sure glad I wasn't lying on the cold cement all day working on tanks. Hope it is warmer tomorrow and we have good luck finding flooring tomorrow for the Safari.

A few pictures of the redo on the tub and the sink. First coat on and looks like it will take about 3. Used a different product this time from the last one we did. Not sure I like it as well because it is thinner and may take a number of coats. I'll reserve judgment until it is done. The other picture is the shiny new belly skin that is itching to get out on the road.

Daughter and family were home for Christmas and did a lot of picking out of different items for their trailer. They are thinking of a click in flooring product that comes in rectangular tiles. Supposed to be harder than linoleum and waterproof once it is put down. Invincible is the name of it and they had lots of colors to choose from. Does anyone know about using this type of product in a trailer?

They have their choice in for water heater, stove, and furnace. The only thing we didn't get to was the counter tops. They have some time for that.

Work on it goes slow as you can't see much of what is being done. The axle isn't here yet so that kept us from being able to move the shell. The black tank isn't in yet either so we are still missing our Christmas deadline. Already we have plans for a couple of trips out with it come summer so no time to waste.

We are going to enjoy one warmer day tomorrow and then our highs are going to be in the negatives so any plans to sunbathe this weekend are over. Might be time to put on a jacket though.

I'm always impressed with the work ya'll do and I'm wishing I had something as nice as that barn to work in but I am definitely not jealous of those negative temps. BRRRRRR!

Thanks Melissa,
My husband mostly does the work and I do a few things. We are trying to do a great job on these so they last another 50 years. Nothing like pride in your work!

Wind chills here are supposed to be -60 on Monday. That is when you see serious ND people stay inside. Uffda!

DH got a number of things done today. The black tank is mostly in and just needs some final supports. The weak point on the roadside rear where the frame was deteriorated has been mended. The newly reinforced bumper became shiny today and looks fabulous.

Very glad we have a inside Rookery to work in for the weekend as temps are going to get to record wind chills. We are going to stay home all weekend and maybe watch the Bison play in Texas. And wish we were there. Go Bison!!

Spent most of the day working on the Safari but took time out to watch the Bison win!! Great game and for a person who doesn't watch sports, it was fun to watch.

Before and after the game, we got a number of things done. DH got the supports up on the black tank. No picture of that though. I worked on cleaning inside skins and then painting them. The really long skin pieces are still in storage far down the lot and will wait until warmer weather before we haul those up. I worked on all the shorter, smaller pieces today.

They look great now and the color our daughter picked out looks fabulous. It is called Lazy Gray from Sherwin Williams and it is a great color without being too dark. I can't wait to see the full effect when the skins go back in. I'm getting a bit ahead of myself though as we haven't even gotten the shell back on yet.

Spent a couple of hours cleaning up the Astrodome. Lots of extra caulking on that over the years. Also cleaned up and primed the shelf unit that goes over the back window. I am going to rescreen all of the screens so I see another order from VTS in my future. A productive day I must say and the Bison won the championship for the third time!

Wanted to add a few more pictures of the parts that were done today so you can see the before and after cleaning. I used a number of buckets of hot water and cleaner. They came out really well for the most part except the long piece that went above the rear. That will have to be made new with the old one as a template. No one will see it back there anyway but we will know it has a good replacement in aluminium for a severely corroded piece.

Spent most of the day cleaning and polishing up small parts. I will post the pictures of before and after so people can see what can be salvaged if they wanted to. Some interesting fixes are seen on these old campers and makes me wonder what people were thinking when they did it. Maybe a lot like I think when I dream up something and later think "Now why did I go and do that?"

The two pictures of the shelf unit should go next to the newly redone one on the bottom. Don't know why one of the pictures of the old fresh water fill is sideways...just lie on your side while you look at it.

Does anyone have a good substitute for these old ceiling fixtures besides buying new covers? Is there a nice looking fixture that we could use instead on the ceiling and over the kitchen area? Ideas anyone?

We have a '65 GlobeTrotter and almost all the chrome fixtures need some degree of polishing. What method did you use on the third picture? is it a matter of sanding or did you use some sort of polish? We will likely be painting our rear bumper too one of these days. You are doing nice work!

Hi Jayne,
Thanks for the kind words. I don't plan on painting the rear trunk cover. I am slowly, very slowly cleaning it inch by inch with brass brushes mounted on a dremel tool. I go through a lot of the brushes and time but you can really spiff things up. I usually clean the item first with cleaner and paper towels. Then I take my time polishing the item. Not the fastest way but then I know things are clean and thoroughly gone through before they go back into the trailer.

Had DH and son haul the four long interior skin pieces and the two end caps into the shop so I could wash them down front and back. Several times in fact. Got the first coat of Lazy Gray on them today. Got the last of the screens cleaned up and got new screening material as well. I will install the screening a little closer to when we have the windows back in so I don't have to clean them up again.

Tomorrow we may attempt to get the shell back on as DH has reinstalled the old axle in order to get the shell back inside where it will be safer. No idea when the new axle will be here. We expected it several weeks ago now. Every day that shell sits outside in these winter winds makes us nervous. Feels like redoing what you have already done is going backwards but we need that shell out of danger as soon as we can.

Only about a month behind schedule we got the frame close to the shell and it is now safely in the Rookery. Still needs a few adjustments to fit down on the frame before we can starting bucking rivets but it is out of the hellish winds we get around here. DH will sleep better now when the winter winds come howling.

Got all the big pieces of the interior cleaned and painted. Now all of them are tucked away safely until they can be reunited down the road. I have most of the small pieces on the trailer cleaned up. I will start working on the window frames on the trailer and get them all cleaned up for new gaskets. Between that and cleaning up the door and screen door, I have my projects for the next six weeks.

My son and I helped with the shell for most of the day and then I worked on the window protector after that. It needs some repair (the long hinge piece is broken at one end) as does one of the screens. Not sure how to fix aluminium other than a patch but that won't work on the screen frames. Hmmmm???? Any ideas?

Finished all the screens last night and will wait on screening them. What are people using for the window guard material that is better than the old fiber glass panels?

Thanks for the photos. Very interesting and challenging project to get the shell inside. Tough work, but now it's safe from the winds. Your family is going to have one heck of a nice Safari when the project is done.

Bought a new camera as the former one kicked the bucket last weekend. Still trying to figure out how to use it so bear with me. I am sure I can still take a lot of photos of my fingers with it just like the old one.

Spent most of the day working on the Safari. DH and I bucked rivets all morning and finished about 1. DH and son riveted on the rest of the belly skin all around the sides in the afternoon. I started cleaning the old gasket gunk off all the windows in the afternoon and just finished a few minutes ago. Pictures of the progress and wondering if dear daughter wants to keep the inside "doorknob".

Spent the last two weekends working on cleaning up the screen door. What a mess. Can't say it is perfect, but lots better. DH has been working on a number of projects: wheel well trim, polishing around top where astrodome goes, wiring, installing patches over old furnace hole, water heater hole, stove vent, etc.

He also made some additional brackets to align the side ribs and the top ribs for extra strength. He has put a new shiny bottom on the inside of the door as the bottom part was pretty bubbled with the vinyl coming loose. He also has patched the main area where the door knob was on the outside and he will install one that we can actually find in one piece. Not the kind with a large bolt for an inside knob.

It is going pretty slow and it will be nice when we can start putting up insulation so then the skins can come back. I'm thinking that is a ways away at this point. Enjoying a blizzard here today so a great day for working on the Safari.

Just a few more photos to prove we didn't sleep in all weekend. One is the new fresh water tank ready to be installed, the patch over the kitchen vent, extra evidence of prior building strategies, and the extra brace on the top to connect side ribs to top ribs. Now they are going to be able to haul all the dolls they want in a roof locker.

I am just coming to the end of complete rewire and insulation installation, it has seemed like it took forever.
