I have run over 35 marathons, yet I still catch myself trying to park closest to the door. When I do, I remind myself that the walk from the far edge of the parking lot would be good for me, in more ways than one. I think most of us - certainly I - have a renegade gene that prompts us to hurry, be first in line, park close, eat too much, sleep to little and find every excuse to avoid reading a good book. St. Paul's lament pretty much sums it up - oh wretched man that I am; I do stuff I shouldn't and don't do the stuff I should (or something like that).

My solution to this horrific solution? Do as I do and park in the South 40 away from, hopefully, everything and everybody.

I seem to have inadvertently solved the problem of my car beeping when locking it - I find myself hitting the manual lock button as I exit the car. Just habit.

As for parking in the south 40, I find walking from there a LOT less annoying than door dings.......I usually have lots of room around me.

Unfortunately stores are laid out so you have to pass the front of the store to park. Maneuver around everyone who’s parked in the fire lane, and a sea of cars sitting with their blinker on to “claim” a close spot, to get to the back forty! I also park in the back 40.

Bon, you should have disclosed that you were service manager in a Ford dealership and therefore, are inherently prejudiced. I'm still waiting for your visit as I visited you in Oregon a few years ago.

I agree that every flash of every type attracts my eyes and confuses me for a second, but then I forget that and why I was in the parking lot in the first place.

Hi, Yes, even though I was also a Chevrolet mechanic for a while, I'm not a real fan of GM products. Since I paid a visit to Bob Cross in New York, he needs to show his new dog somewhere in Oregon so he can visit me. And I do owe you a visit in Colorado. We will ask for directions from you when the time comes. [and when there's no ice on the streets]

Hi, I can do this in Wal-Mart, Lowe's, Home Depot, and Costco parking lots. Unfortunately, our local Mall only has a small parking garage building. [no south 40]

What was GM thinking?

Hm, other than the first 4 places, and Cracker Barrel, we don’t park there....with the TV, anyway.

Bob,

I expect Bob (Buffalo version) will get here on his dog show trip before he gets to Salem since he has a show in Colorado. Maybe we can all meet here and argue about Toyotas, Chevies and Fords and flash each other's back up lights at each other.

To me the argument is about whether Ford or Chevy makes worse vehicles, but of course, they are better than Fiat/Chrysler. I suppose Nissan and Honda can considered when they make real trucks. My first vehicle was a '56 Mercury and it ruined all Ford products for me forever—but at 18 is was a car! When I inherited my father's '85 Oldsmobile, that ruined GM vehicles for all time (we drove it for 45,000 miles and sold it to a Toronado fan; among other things it needed a new master cylinder every 15,000 miles). Toyota rules!

What was this thread about anyway?

No discussion on parking lot annoyances would be complete without raising the real annoyances imposed on the long-suffering general populace by those towering intellectuals who seem totally unable to master the task of pressing the correct button and set off the alarm instead of unlocking the door.

By my back of the envelope scribbles, at any one time there are 47,963,479 car alarms blaring in American Walmarts while their owners just stand there doing nothing.

Hi, I have actually seen several times, people turning on their car alarms with their remotes for the sole purpose of finding where their car is parked.

I wish there was a way to disable the stupid alarm button on my remotes. No one pays attention anyway so I don’t see the point.

I have never seen that and wonder what stores these people frequent? We sometimes go to Walmart, so it must be further down the pecking order, perhaps a dollar store?

I have seen people flashing lights to find their car by simply pressing either the lock or unlock button.

Funny true story.

Hi, I went to a huge shopping mall and parked near May Co. When I was done shopping, I headed out to the area where I remember parking. [thousands of cars] Problem was, I forgot which one of my cars that I drove that day. Now in my defense, we had five cars and I kept keys for all of them on one ring.

When I drove a gray Impala I often went for the wrong one and sometimes almost got in. I swear every other car was an Impala.

I love my 2500HD. Having said that, while we are lamenting about Corporate bungling and in particular GM, let me throw out one other.

My truck is equipped with the Driver Information Center, or DIC. Handy for transmission temps, tire pressures, and integrated trailer brake controller monitoring.

Just waiting for the poor soul, up on being pulled over by the local law enforcement, counters with "l am very sorry officer, but I was looking down at my DIC."
