One way to describe what black and white are is to say that:
White is what we call a mixture of all possible colors in the visible light spectrum, which is more usually explained as being "all the colors of the rainbow". Black is what we call the absence of any possible colors in the visible light spectrum.

Another way to explain black and white is, if any visible light is shone onto an object that is painted pure black, it will reflect none of that light whatsoever and will therefore always appear to have no color itself. That is why it is called black.

If any visible light is shone onto an object that is painted pure white, it will reflect the colors of any such light which may shine on it and will appear to have the colors of that light itself. If such light is pure red, the object will appear to be pure red in color, if such light is pure yellow, the object will appear to be pure yellow in color, etc. If the light shining on the object is what we call white, because it has all the colors of the rainbow in it, the object will appear to be white in color.

Another interesting fact is that we can only see less than 1% of the electromagnetic spectrum and hear less than 1% of the acoustic spectrum. The existence of the rainbow depends on the conical photo-receptors in your eyes, to animals without cones, the rainbow doesn't exist. So you don't just look at a rainbow, you create it. This is pretty amazing, especially considering all the beautiful colors you see represent less than 1% of the electromagnetic spectrum.

The perception of the quality of color is essentially a physiolgical, optical and nuerological process. Therefore there is no way a person can know what the color of an object is, a priori, in actuality. For that matter there is no way we can know if the object actually exists outside of our perception.

This is a very good thing. Can you imagine trying to avoid running into things, if you were being blinded by all the cell phones, radios, and 50KW TV stations within reception range. It would be a real nuisance to have to shut yourself in a lead lined room in order to read a book. There would be a plus side. You would be a very good gamma ray burst detector.

The "or" is just poor spelling by a bunch of "mericans".

English speakers who moved to America took these habits with them and H. L. Mencken notes that "honor appears in the United States Declaration of Independence, but it seems to have got there rather by accident than by design. In Jefferson's original draft it is spelled honour."

Go to a paint store where they sell colors and they'll have white and black. End of argument.

Then there are the primary colors. Everyone agrees on blue and red, but is the third one yellow or green? Or maybe not blue and red: maybe cyan, magenta and yellow.

Now that's something to argue about.

But color is color to me and there should be a definite article before university and hospital.

Just sitting here house-bound in the wind and rain, reading this thread and waiting for Isaac. Is that like waiting for Godot.... oooooh, I really don't know! Shows my level of enthusiasm for any other worthwhile project!

Anyway, primary colors (colours for our English brethren) are red, blue and yellow.......you get green by mixing yellow and blue. If you doubt me, just open up your printer and see what the primary hues (missed that bullet) are in the cartridge.

So if I paint the A-frame black, I'm not really painting it at all? Just need that cleared up to save some labor (not labour; Gordon Brown couldn't save it, why should I?).

I didn't finish university because I was visiting friends in the hospital. I agree, hospital needs an article, but one for univeristy depends on context.

With an additive system primaries are Red Blue and Yellow
With a subtractive system primaries are Magenta, Cyan and Yellow
A third system is Red Blue and Green. Which of course says nothing about hue or chroma.

But what I want to know is what is puce? Something like barf?
